Shortness of breath?
I have not experienced any breathing difficulties before, but in the last day or two, I have been feeling a bit short of breath.
It feels like my breath is being constricted, and I have to exert a lot of effort to inhale comfortably.
Sometimes, it feels like I'm running out of air.
Each episode of difficulty breathing lasts about 15 to 20 minutes.
I am not fatigued or under significant stress, so what could be the problem? Which specialist do you recommend I see?

Experiencing shortness of breath can be a concerning symptom, especially if it is a new development. Based on your description, it sounds like you are experiencing episodes of dyspnea, which is the medical term for shortness of breath. This sensation can feel like a tightness in the chest or a feeling of not getting enough air, and it can be quite distressing.
Given that you have not had any prior issues with breathing and that this is a recent occurrence, it is important to consider several potential causes. Shortness of breath can arise from various conditions, including respiratory issues, cardiovascular problems, anxiety, or even environmental factors such as allergens.
1. Respiratory Causes: Conditions like asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pneumonia, or even an allergic reaction can lead to difficulty breathing. Since you mentioned a history of mild asthma and nasal allergies, it is possible that your symptoms could be related to these conditions. Asthma can cause bronchoconstriction, leading to feelings of tightness in the chest and difficulty in breathing.
2. Cardiovascular Issues: Heart-related problems, such as congestive heart failure or arrhythmias, can also manifest as shortness of breath. If your heart is not pumping effectively, fluid can accumulate in the lungs, causing difficulty in breathing.
3. Anxiety and Panic Attacks: Sometimes, shortness of breath can be linked to anxiety or panic attacks. These episodes can cause hyperventilation, leading to feelings of breathlessness. The fact that you mentioned feeling like you need to consciously focus on your breathing could suggest an anxiety component.
4. Environmental Factors: Allergens or irritants in your environment, such as smoke, pollution, or strong odors, can trigger respiratory symptoms, especially if you have a history of allergies.
Given the nature of your symptoms, it is advisable to seek medical attention promptly. You should consider visiting a healthcare provider who specializes in respiratory issues, such as a pulmonologist. They can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include a physical examination, lung function tests, and possibly imaging studies like a chest X-ray or CT scan to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms.
In the meantime, here are some steps you can take to manage your symptoms:
- Stay Calm: Anxiety can exacerbate feelings of breathlessness. Try to remain calm and practice deep breathing exercises if you feel anxious.
- Avoid Triggers: If you are aware of any specific triggers that worsen your symptoms (like allergens or strong odors), try to avoid them.
- Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of when your symptoms occur, how long they last, and any associated factors (like physical activity or stress). This information can be helpful for your healthcare provider.
In conclusion, while shortness of breath can have various causes, it is essential to take it seriously, especially since it is a new symptom for you. Seeking medical advice from a pulmonologist or your primary care physician will help you get to the root of the problem and receive appropriate treatment. Remember, early intervention can often lead to better outcomes, so do not hesitate to reach out for help.
