Varicocele
Hello, doctor.
I have varicocele on my left side.
After my surgery on July 17, the doctor discharged me the next day.
However, I have been feeling a hard lump and pain in my left testicle.
I requested to stay a few more days, and the doctor performed an ultrasound, which showed some residual blood flow and varicocele.
I was prescribed antibiotic 705, which improved the pain somewhat.
I thought I could be discharged, but now it is July 23, and I still feel a hard lump and pain in my left testicle.
Walking and sitting down still cause discomfort.
Is this a normal phenomenon?

It is recommended that you visit a urologist in person to have your issues addressed.
Please have the attending physician arrange appropriate examinations to determine the cause and provide targeted treatment.

After undergoing varicocele repair surgery, it is not uncommon for patients to experience some degree of discomfort, swelling, and even the sensation of hard lumps in the affected area. The surgery aims to alleviate the symptoms associated with varicocele, such as pain and potential fertility issues, but the recovery process can vary significantly from person to person.
In your case, the presence of a hard lump and ongoing pain in the left testicle could be attributed to several factors. First, it is essential to understand that post-operative swelling is a normal part of the healing process. The body responds to surgery with inflammation, which can lead to temporary changes in the tissue structure, including the formation of scar tissue. This scar tissue can sometimes feel like a hard lump and may be tender to the touch.
Additionally, the sensation of pain when walking or changing positions could be due to residual swelling or irritation of the surrounding tissues. It is also possible that there is still some degree of varicocele present, as indicated by the ultrasound findings. While the surgery aims to correct the issue, it is not always 100% effective, and some patients may experience a recurrence of varicocele symptoms.
The use of antibiotics, such as the one you mentioned (705), suggests that your doctor is monitoring for any signs of infection, which can also contribute to pain and discomfort. If the pain persists or worsens, it is crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may recommend further imaging studies or evaluations to rule out complications such as hematoma (a localized collection of blood outside of blood vessels) or infection.
In terms of what you can do to manage your symptoms, here are some recommendations:
1. Rest and Recovery: Ensure you are allowing your body adequate time to heal. Avoid strenuous activities that could exacerbate your pain.
2. Ice Therapy: Applying ice packs to the affected area can help reduce swelling and numb the pain. Make sure to wrap the ice pack in a cloth to protect your skin.
3. Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can be helpful in managing discomfort. However, consult your doctor before taking any medication, especially if you are currently on antibiotics.
4. Follow-Up Appointments: Keep all scheduled follow-up appointments with your surgeon. They will be able to assess your recovery and determine if any further intervention is necessary.
5. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in your symptoms, including increased pain, redness, or discharge from the surgical site, and report these to your doctor immediately.
6. Physical Activity: Gradually reintroduce light activities as tolerated, but avoid heavy lifting or high-impact exercises until cleared by your physician.
In conclusion, while some discomfort and the sensation of a hard lump can be normal after varicocele repair surgery, it is essential to maintain open communication with your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice based on your specific situation and ensure that your recovery is progressing as expected. If your symptoms do not improve or worsen, further evaluation may be necessary to address any underlying issues.
