I started my period before finishing the medication?

Hello, I have been taking Yuji for about 10 years.
I have uterine fibroids and adenomyosis (recently I underwent a hysteroscopic procedure to remove fibroids from the endometrium).
Recently, I started my period on the 19th day of taking Yuji this month.
Is this normal?

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, temporarily stop the medication and resume it next month to see if everything returns to normal.
If it is still not normal, it is recommended to consult a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

When it comes to menstrual cycles and the use of hormonal medications like Yejiyi (also known as a contraceptive pill), there are several factors to consider regarding the regularity of your cycle and the potential effects of the medication on your menstrual pattern.

Firstly, it is important to understand that hormonal contraceptives can significantly influence the menstrual cycle. Yejiyi, being a hormonal contraceptive, works by regulating hormones that control the menstrual cycle. For many women, this can lead to more predictable periods, lighter flow, and reduced menstrual pain. However, it is not uncommon for women to experience changes in their menstrual cycle when starting or continuing hormonal contraceptives, especially after a long duration of use, such as ten years in your case.

Regarding your specific question about getting your period early while on Yejiyi, it is essential to consider a few points:
1. Cycle Regularity: A typical menstrual cycle ranges from 21 to 35 days, with variations being normal. If your cycle has been consistently around this range, an early period may not be alarming. However, if this is a new occurrence, it could be worth monitoring.

2. Impact of Yejiyi: Since you have been taking Yejiyi for a long time, your body may have adapted to its hormonal effects. However, factors such as stress, changes in weight, illness, or even the recent surgical procedure (the removal of fibroids) can disrupt your hormonal balance and lead to changes in your menstrual cycle.
3. Early Menstrual Bleeding: If you experienced your period on the 19th day of taking Yejiyi, it could be classified as breakthrough bleeding, which is not uncommon with hormonal contraceptives. This can happen due to fluctuations in hormone levels or if the body is adjusting to the medication.

4. Underlying Conditions: You mentioned having uterine fibroids and adenomyosis. These conditions can also affect menstrual patterns. After surgical interventions, it is not unusual for your cycle to be irregular for a few months as your body heals and adjusts.

5. Pregnancy Consideration: If you have been taking Yejiyi consistently and correctly, the likelihood of pregnancy is low. However, if you missed any doses or took the medication inconsistently, it may be wise to take a pregnancy test to rule out this possibility.

6. Consultation with a Healthcare Provider: Given your medical history and the recent changes in your menstrual cycle, it would be prudent to consult with your healthcare provider. They can assess whether the early onset of your period is a side effect of the medication, a result of your underlying conditions, or something that requires further investigation.

In summary, while experiencing an early period while taking Yejiyi can be normal, especially after a long duration of use, it is essential to monitor your symptoms and consult with a healthcare professional if you have concerns. They can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and current health status.
