Internal and external hemorrhoid surgery?

Hello Doctor, I underwent surgery to remove internal and external hemorrhoids on October 13th.
After the surgery, I have been taking warm sitz baths at least three times a day.
The wound from the external hemorrhoid no longer hurts, but I always feel like I am not completely clean after a bowel movement and have a sensation of stool being stuck.
When I touch the area where the internal hemorrhoid was located while showering, I do not feel any stool inside the anus, but I can feel a round, hard mass that is the same size as the original internal hemorrhoid.
I am very concerned that the internal hemorrhoid may not have been completely removed during the surgery, or if it is just swelling that has not yet subsided.
How long does it typically take for the swelling to go down? Will I eventually be able to touch the area without feeling any protrusions? Additionally, the skin around the anus is experiencing severe itching.

After hemorrhoid surgery, pain typically lasts for about a week, but complete healing of the wound may take around a month.
Prior to that, these symptoms are normal.
You can apply topical hemorrhoid ointments to alleviate symptoms.
The feeling of constipation is related to the fact that the surgical site has not fully healed yet, so there is no need to be overly concerned.

After undergoing surgery for hemorrhoid removal, it's common for patients to experience a range of symptoms during the recovery process. Your concerns about feeling incomplete bowel movements, the sensation of a lump where the internal hemorrhoid was, and itching around the anal area are valid and worth discussing.

Firstly, it's important to understand that the surgical site can take time to heal, and swelling is a common post-operative symptom. The presence of a hard lump in the area where the internal hemorrhoid was located could be due to residual swelling or inflammation rather than a sign that the hemorrhoid was not completely removed. In many cases, the tissue around the surgical site can remain sensitive and swollen for several weeks following the procedure. This swelling can create a feeling of fullness or pressure, which might be interpreted as an incomplete bowel movement.

Typically, the healing process for hemorrhoid surgery can take anywhere from a few weeks to a couple of months, depending on various factors such as the extent of the surgery, individual healing rates, and adherence to post-operative care instructions. It's not unusual for patients to feel discomfort or a sensation of fullness during bowel movements during this time. As the swelling subsides and the tissue heals, these sensations should gradually diminish.

Regarding the itching you are experiencing around the anal area, this can also be a common post-operative symptom. Itching may arise from several factors, including irritation from stool, hygiene practices, or even the healing process itself. Keeping the area clean and dry is crucial, and using gentle, non-irritating products can help alleviate discomfort. Warm sitz baths, which you are already practicing, can also soothe the area and promote healing.

If you are concerned that the internal hemorrhoid was not fully removed, it is essential to follow up with your surgeon or healthcare provider. They can perform a thorough examination to assess the surgical site and determine whether any additional treatment is necessary. In some cases, a follow-up appointment may involve a physical examination or even a flexible sigmoidoscopy to visualize the area more clearly.

In terms of managing your symptoms, here are some recommendations:
1. Dietary Adjustments: Ensure you are consuming a high-fiber diet to promote regular bowel movements and prevent straining, which can exacerbate symptoms. Staying hydrated is equally important.

2. Pain Management: If you are experiencing discomfort, over-the-counter pain relievers may help. However, consult your healthcare provider before taking any medication.

3. Hygiene Practices: Continue with warm sitz baths and maintain good hygiene. Avoid using harsh soaps or wipes that may irritate the area.

4. Monitoring Symptoms: Keep track of your symptoms, including any changes in the lump's size or sensation, as well as the severity of itching. If symptoms worsen or do not improve, seek medical advice promptly.

5. Follow-Up Care: Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments with your surgeon to monitor your recovery progress. They can provide personalized advice and interventions if necessary.

In conclusion, while your concerns are understandable, many of the symptoms you are experiencing can be part of the normal recovery process after hemorrhoid surgery. However, maintaining open communication with your healthcare provider is crucial to ensure that your recovery is on track and to address any complications that may arise.
