Chest Pain Between Nipples: Possible Causes and Concerns - Pulmonology

Tenderness in the middle of the chest?

I experience pain when pressing about 3 centimeters towards the center from both nipples, with the left side being more pronounced, feeling like a bruised pain.
The pain is manageable when standing, but becomes more noticeable when lying down.
Aside from the pain when pressed, I do not feel discomfort during other activities.
I have a history of nasal allergies, and since I changed cat litter, I have been experiencing post-nasal drip starting from the first day of the change, to the point where I cannot sleep at night.
I do not have severe coughing, but I find myself wanting to clear my throat.
By morning, I return to normal.
Is this a lung issue or a spinal issue? (I have previously seen an orthopedic doctor who noted a scoliosis condition.)

Dr. Yang Wenda reply Pulmonology

Hello: Allergic reactions in the nose can worsen with exposure to pet dander or cold weather.
It is recommended to wear a mask and maintain good ventilation.
As for the tenderness in the costal cartilage of the chest, it is advised not to press on it to test for pain.
It will naturally improve in a few days!

More Info

Chest pain, particularly localized pain between the nipples, can arise from various causes, and it is essential to approach this symptom with caution. Given your description of the pain being more pronounced on the left side and exacerbated by pressure, it is crucial to consider both musculoskeletal and potential cardiac issues, especially since you have a history of spinal scoliosis.

Possible Causes of Chest Pain
1. Musculoskeletal Issues:
- Given your history of scoliosis, the pain could be related to musculoskeletal strain or discomfort. Conditions such as costochondritis (inflammation of the cartilage connecting the ribs to the sternum) or muscle strain can cause localized pain that worsens with certain movements or pressure. The fact that the pain is more noticeable when lying down could suggest that certain positions are aggravating the strain on your muscles or joints.

2. Cardiac Concerns:
- While your description does not suggest classic cardiac symptoms (such as radiating pain, shortness of breath, or sweating), it is essential to rule out any cardiac issues, especially since the left side of the chest is involved. Conditions such as angina or even myocardial infarction can present with atypical symptoms, particularly in women. If you experience any additional symptoms like dizziness, nausea, or increased pain, seek immediate medical attention.

3. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD):
- GERD can cause chest pain that mimics cardiac pain. Symptoms often include a burning sensation in the chest, especially after eating or when lying down. If you have a history of acid reflux, this could be a contributing factor.

4. Respiratory Issues:
- The nasal symptoms you describe, including post-nasal drip and the recent change in cat litter, could indicate an allergic reaction or sinusitis, which can sometimes lead to referred pain in the chest area. However, it is less likely to cause localized pain between the nipples unless there is significant coughing or muscle strain from coughing.

5. Anxiety and Stress:
- Anxiety can manifest as chest pain, often described as tightness or pressure. If you are experiencing increased stress or anxiety, this could contribute to your symptoms.

Recommendations
- Medical Evaluation: Given the complexity of your symptoms, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. This may include a physical examination, imaging studies (like an X-ray or MRI of the spine), and possibly an EKG to rule out cardiac issues.

- Symptom Management: In the meantime, consider avoiding activities that exacerbate the pain. Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, may help alleviate discomfort, but consult with a healthcare provider before starting any medication, especially if you have other underlying conditions.

- Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in your symptoms, including the onset of new symptoms or changes in the intensity of the pain. This information will be valuable for your healthcare provider.

- Allergy Management: If you suspect that your nasal symptoms are related to the new cat litter, consider switching back to the previous type or using hypoallergenic options. Managing your allergies may help alleviate some of the discomfort you are experiencing.

In conclusion, while there are various potential causes for your chest pain, it is crucial to approach this symptom with a comprehensive evaluation to ensure that serious conditions are ruled out. Your health and safety should always be the priority, so do not hesitate to seek medical advice.
