Genital issues
Hello Doctor, I have been experiencing itching in my pubic hair for several years.
Initially, I thought it was due to wearing tight-fitting pants, but since last year, I have mostly been wearing slightly looser pants, yet the itching persists.
It doesn't itch all day, but occasionally I feel the itch, often while showering and washing my intimate areas.
I also tend to scratch unconsciously while sleeping.
There is no itching at the vaginal opening, and I have not engaged in sexual intercourse.
I have checked for pubic lice but did not see any (though I am unsure if I might have missed them).
If it is not caused by lice, what other reasons could be causing the itching? If I continue to avoid seeing a doctor, could it lead to a more serious condition? Since the itching is not constant, I thought it might not be severe enough to warrant a doctor's visit, but recently it has become quite bothersome, and I have decided to seek medical attention.
However, I have been dealing with this for many years and am worried there might be a more serious issue.
I have been a bit busy lately, which is why I am asking online first.
Thank you.

Without actually seeing the lesion, it is impossible to determine the issue.
If it is very concerning, please seek medical attention as soon as possible.
Only after an examination can the problem be identified and addressed.

More Info
It sounds like you've been dealing with persistent itching in your pubic area for quite some time, and it's understandable that this issue is causing you discomfort and concern. Let's break down the potential causes of your symptoms and discuss when it would be appropriate to seek medical attention.
Possible Causes of Pubic Hair Itching
1. Irritation or Allergic Reactions: One of the most common causes of itching in the pubic area is irritation from products such as soaps, detergents, or personal care items. If you've recently changed any products, this could be a factor. Additionally, wearing tight clothing can sometimes cause friction and irritation, but since you've switched to looser clothing, this may not be the primary cause.
2. Dry Skin: The skin in the pubic area can become dry, especially if you frequently wash with harsh soaps or if the weather is particularly dry. This dryness can lead to itching.
3. Folliculitis: This is an inflammation of the hair follicles, which can occur due to shaving or waxing. If you've been grooming the area, this could lead to irritation and itching.
4. Infections: While you mentioned that you do not have any visible signs of lice, other infections such as fungal infections (like jock itch) or bacterial infections could also cause itching. These infections can sometimes occur without obvious symptoms, so it's worth considering.
5. Skin Conditions: Conditions such as eczema or psoriasis can also affect the pubic area, leading to itching and discomfort.
When to See a Doctor
Given that you've been experiencing this issue for several years, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional. Here are some signs that indicate you should seek medical attention:
- Persistent Symptoms: If the itching continues despite your efforts to manage it, or if it worsens over time, it's time to see a doctor.
- Changes in Skin: If you notice any rashes, bumps, or changes in the skin in the affected area, these could be signs of a more serious condition that requires treatment.
- Discomfort or Pain: If the itching is accompanied by pain, swelling, or any unusual discharge, you should seek medical advice promptly.
- Impact on Daily Life: If the itching is affecting your quality of life, such as disrupting your sleep or concentration during the day, it's important to address it.
Conclusion
While it may seem manageable at the moment, chronic itching can sometimes indicate underlying issues that may require treatment. It's good that you've decided to see a doctor, as they can provide a thorough examination and possibly recommend tests to determine the exact cause of your symptoms. Early intervention can prevent potential complications and help you find relief from your discomfort.
In the meantime, consider keeping a diary of your symptoms, including when the itching occurs, any products you use, and any other relevant factors. This information can be helpful for your healthcare provider in diagnosing the issue. Remember, taking care of your health is important, and seeking help is a proactive step towards finding a solution.
