Postoperative care after uterine polyp removal?

I have been trying to conceive for two years without success.
After undergoing a hysteroscopy, a polyp was found, which the doctor said is very mild and small in size, but it is still recommended to remove it to facilitate conception.
The polyp removal surgery was performed on the ninth day of my menstrual cycle.
The doctor only prescribed medication for one day, and on the third day post-surgery, I noticed some bleeding when using the restroom, but otherwise, there were no issues.
It coincided with my ovulation period, and I did not feel any discomfort, so I had intercourse with my husband.
There was washing before and after intercourse, and I felt a slight pain in my lower abdomen during more vigorous activity.
However, I dismissed it since I had experienced similar discomfort during ovulation in the past.
Later, I learned that sexual activity should be avoided for at least a week post-surgery, but we have already had intercourse.
Could this cause any adverse effects? Is the lower abdominal pain during intercourse a sign of possible inflammation? How can I prevent inflammation?

Post-polyp removal can raise several concerns regarding fertility and recovery, especially for individuals who have been trying to conceive without success. It’s understandable to feel anxious about the potential impacts on your reproductive health after such a procedure. Here’s a comprehensive overview of what to expect after polyp removal, how it may affect your fertility, and tips for recovery.

Understanding Polyp Removal and Fertility
Uterine polyps are growths on the inner lining of the uterus that can sometimes interfere with fertility. They can cause irregular bleeding, and in some cases, they may prevent a fertilized egg from implanting properly. The removal of these polyps, especially if they are small and not causing significant symptoms, is often recommended to improve the chances of conception.

Recovery After Polyp Removal
1. Post-Operative Care: After the procedure, it’s common to experience some light bleeding or spotting, which seems to be what you experienced. This is typically normal and should resolve within a few days. However, if you notice heavy bleeding or severe pain, it’s essential to contact your healthcare provider.

2. Avoiding Infection: It’s crucial to follow your doctor’s advice regarding post-operative care. Generally, avoiding sexual intercourse for at least one week after the procedure is recommended to reduce the risk of infection. Engaging in sexual activity too soon could potentially introduce bacteria into the uterus, leading to complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).

3. Pain Management: Experiencing some discomfort or pain in the lower abdomen after intercourse is not uncommon, especially if you are still in the recovery phase. However, if the pain persists or worsens, it could indicate an infection or other complications, and you should seek medical advice.

Fertility Concerns
1. Timing for Conception: After polyp removal, many healthcare providers recommend waiting for at least one full menstrual cycle before trying to conceive. This allows your body to heal properly and ensures that your uterine lining is in optimal condition for implantation.

2. Monitoring Ovulation: Since you mentioned that the procedure coincided with your ovulation period, it’s important to monitor your cycle closely. If you have regular cycles, you may want to use ovulation predictor kits to identify your fertile window in the following months.

3. Consulting a Specialist: If you continue to experience difficulties in conceiving after the removal of the polyp, it may be beneficial to consult a fertility specialist. They can perform further evaluations to rule out other potential issues that may be affecting your fertility.

Preventing Inflammation and Complications
1. Hygiene Practices: To minimize the risk of infection, maintain good hygiene practices. This includes washing your hands before touching your genital area and ensuring that any sexual activity is consensual and safe.

2. Follow-Up Appointments: Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments with your healthcare provider. They can assess your recovery and check for any signs of complications, such as infection or abnormal healing.

3. Healthy Lifestyle: Adopting a healthy lifestyle can also support your reproductive health. This includes a balanced diet, regular exercise, managing stress, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.

Conclusion
In summary, while the removal of a uterine polyp can be a positive step towards improving your fertility, it’s essential to allow your body adequate time to heal. Avoiding sexual intercourse for at least a week post-procedure is advisable to reduce the risk of complications. If you experience persistent pain or unusual symptoms, don’t hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider. With proper care and monitoring, you can optimize your chances of conception in the future. Remember, fertility can be a complex journey, and seeking support from medical professionals can provide you with the guidance you need.
