Addressing Common Vision Issues: Myopia, Eye Strain, and Glare Concerns - Ophthalmology

Vision problems

Hello, Doctor.
I have some questions regarding my high myopia (right eye -1500, left eye -1300).

Q1: I have heard that using old glasses can be more comfortable for long periods of reading or using a computer.
However, my old glasses were prescribed several years ago with a prescription of -1000 for both eyes.
Is the difference in prescription too significant, and would it be better not to use them at all?
Q2: Is it normal for the dominant eye to change? I remember that my dominant eye was my right eye during previous tests, but after recently doing a cross-eyed test while focusing on a distant point, I found that it has changed to my left eye.
I have also noticed that my left eye's vision seems to be deteriorating.
Am I overthinking this?
Q3: Recently, when wearing glasses at night, I have noticed glare from traffic lights, where the lights appear to spread out in a cross shape.
I have experienced glare since childhood, but it used to be minor and only around the lights.
Is this harmful to my eyes? Do I need to get new glasses? I apologize for the many questions, and I appreciate your help.

Hello, it is best to consult an ophthalmologist for an eye examination and prescription for glasses.
Additionally, it is necessary to have an examination for high myopia.
Wishing you safety and health.

Hello! Thank you for your detailed questions regarding your vision issues. Let's address each of your concerns one by one.

Q1: Using Old Glasses for Reading or Computer Work
Using old glasses that are significantly different from your current prescription can lead to discomfort and visual strain. Since you mentioned that your old glasses are for a prescription of 1000 degrees, which is quite a bit lower than your current prescription of 1500 and 1300 degrees, it is likely that using them could cause more strain rather than relief. The reason is that your eyes have adapted to the higher prescription, and reverting to a weaker lens may force your eyes to work harder to focus, potentially leading to headaches, eye fatigue, and blurred vision. It is advisable to use glasses that match your current prescription for the best visual comfort and clarity.

Q2: Changes in Dominant Eye
It is not uncommon for individuals to experience changes in their dominant eye over time. The dominant eye is typically the one that provides a slightly stronger input to the brain for visual processing. Factors such as changes in vision, eye health, or even the way you use your eyes can influence which eye becomes dominant. If you are noticing a difference in clarity between your eyes, it could be due to several reasons, including changes in refractive error, cataracts, or other eye conditions. It’s important to have regular eye examinations to monitor any changes in your vision and ensure that both eyes are healthy.

Q3: Glare and Halos Around Lights
Experiencing glare or halos around lights, especially at night, can be a common issue for individuals with high myopia. This phenomenon can be exacerbated by several factors, including the shape of your cornea, the presence of any cataracts, or even the quality of your current lenses. The fact that you have noticed an increase in the intensity of this glare could indicate a need for a new prescription or a different type of lens that reduces glare, such as anti-reflective coatings. While occasional glare is typically not harmful, if it significantly affects your ability to see at night or causes discomfort, it would be wise to consult with your eye care professional about possibly updating your glasses or exploring other options.

Additional Considerations
Given your high degree of myopia, it is crucial to maintain regular eye check-ups. High myopia can increase the risk of other eye conditions, such as retinal detachment or glaucoma, so monitoring your eye health is essential. If you experience any sudden changes in vision, such as flashes of light, new floaters, or significant changes in clarity, seek immediate medical attention.

In summary, using glasses that match your current prescription is important for comfort and clarity. Changes in dominant eye can occur and should be monitored, and glare or halos around lights may require a reevaluation of your prescription or lens type. Always prioritize regular eye examinations to ensure your eyes remain healthy and your vision is optimal. If you have further concerns or experience any new symptoms, do not hesitate to reach out to your eye care provider.
