Unusual Skin Changes in the Genital Area: When to Seek Help - Obstetrics and Gynecology

I'm not sure what it is?

Hello doctor, about a year ago, I developed a pimple in the hair-bearing area of my genital region that was painful when pressed, similar to a regular acne.
After a week or two, it disappeared on its own.
However, I recently noticed that the scar has not faded, and the area does not resemble a typical acne scar.
It feels normal to the touch, but the skin in that area is hairless and appears darker.
What could this condition be? Do I need to get it checked, or is there a topical ointment that can help it heal?

Dr. Cai Yonglong reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello: Most cases are due to inflammation of the sebaceous glands.
If there is severe or worsening purulence, please visit a gynecologist for an internal examination.
Thank you for your inquiry.

When it comes to unusual skin changes in the genital area, it is essential to approach the situation with caution and seek professional medical advice. Based on your description, it sounds like you experienced a painful bump in the pubic area that resembled a typical acne lesion, which subsequently resolved but left behind a scar. The area now appears hairless and has a darker pigmentation compared to the surrounding skin.

There are several potential explanations for the symptoms you are experiencing. The initial bump could have been a follicular infection, such as folliculitis, which is an inflammation of the hair follicles often caused by bacteria. When these lesions heal, they can leave behind scars or changes in pigmentation, which is what you are observing now. The absence of hair in that area could be due to damage to the hair follicle during the inflammatory process.

It is crucial to understand that any unusual changes in the genital area warrant a thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional, particularly a dermatologist or a urologist. They can provide a proper diagnosis and rule out other conditions, such as sexually transmitted infections (STIs), cysts, or even more serious dermatological issues.
In terms of treatment, topical treatments may help with the appearance of scars or hyperpigmentation. Products containing ingredients like silicone gel, vitamin E, or hydroquinone can sometimes improve the appearance of scars. However, these should be used under the guidance of a healthcare provider, especially in sensitive areas like the genitals.
Moreover, if you are experiencing any discomfort, itching, or signs of infection (such as increased redness, swelling, or discharge), it is imperative to seek medical attention promptly. Self-treatment without a proper diagnosis can sometimes exacerbate the condition or lead to complications.

To summarize, while it may be tempting to wait and see if the scar improves on its own, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment options. They can provide tailored advice based on your specific situation and medical history. Additionally, maintaining good hygiene and avoiding irritation in the genital area can help prevent future issues. If you have any concerns about your skin or health, do not hesitate to reach out for professional help.
