After the medical abortion, the menstrual period has ended, but there is still dark brown discharge?
In September, I discovered I was five weeks pregnant.
After five days, I underwent a medical abortion on September 21.
After taking the medication, during my first follow-up appointment, the doctor performed an ultrasound and indicated that the abortion was not complete.
The doctor prescribed uterotonics again, and I had weekly follow-ups.
During the last follow-up, the doctor conducted a transvaginal ultrasound and confirmed that everything had cleared out.
I also informed the doctor that I had intermittent dark brown discharge.
The doctor then prescribed another five days' worth of medication, instructing me to take one packet in the morning and one in the evening, regardless of whether I was still bleeding.
The doctor explained that my first menstrual period would come a few days after finishing the medication and advised me to continue taking birth control pills for three months.
On October 21, my first day of menstruation began, and it ended on October 27.
After a few days, there was no discharge at all, but on November 1, I started to notice dark brown discharge again, which was minimal—only a few drops on my underwear or visible when wiping.
I also experienced slight cramping in my lower abdomen.
Could this be a result of the medical abortion, or is my menstrual cycle irregular?

Understanding brown discharge after a medication abortion can be a common concern for many individuals. After undergoing a medication abortion, it is not unusual to experience various types of vaginal discharge, including brown discharge, which can be alarming but is often a normal part of the recovery process.
When you had your medication abortion, the process typically involves taking two different medications: mifepristone and misoprostol. Mifepristone is taken first to block the hormone progesterone, which is necessary for the pregnancy to continue. After a few days, misoprostol is taken to induce contractions and expel the pregnancy tissue. Following this process, it is expected that you will experience bleeding, similar to a heavy menstrual period, which can last for several days to weeks.
The brown discharge you are experiencing is likely old blood that is being expelled from your body. This can happen as your uterus continues to contract and clear out any remaining tissue. It is important to note that brown discharge is typically not a cause for concern, especially if it is accompanied by mild cramping, which is also common after an abortion. The discharge may vary in color and consistency, ranging from bright red to brown, and can sometimes be intermittent.
In your case, since you mentioned that you had a follow-up ultrasound that indicated your uterus was clear, the brown discharge you are experiencing could be a normal part of your body’s healing process. However, it is essential to monitor the situation. If the discharge becomes heavy, has a foul odor, or is accompanied by severe pain, fever, or other concerning symptoms, it is crucial to contact your healthcare provider immediately, as these could be signs of an infection or retained tissue.
Regarding your menstrual cycle, it is common for periods to be irregular after a medication abortion. Your first period after the procedure may not resemble your typical cycle, and it can take a few months for your body to return to its regular rhythm. The hormonal changes from the abortion and the medications you are taking, including the contraceptive pills, can also affect your menstrual cycle. It is advisable to continue taking the contraceptive pills as prescribed, as they can help regulate your cycle and prevent unintended pregnancies.
In summary, the brown discharge you are experiencing after your medication abortion is likely a normal part of the healing process. It is essential to keep track of your symptoms and maintain communication with your healthcare provider. If you have any concerns or if your symptoms change, do not hesitate to reach out for medical advice. Your health and well-being are paramount, and your healthcare provider can offer the best guidance tailored to your specific situation.
