I am looking for doctors in the Taipei and New Taipei areas who specialize in corrective surgery for O-shaped legs?
Due to frequent pain and sometimes feeling like my knee is misaligned, about 5 or 6 years ago, a doctor in Hualien diagnosed me with bow legs (O-shaped legs) but did not provide much explanation, only mentioning that surgery was the only option for improvement.
Recently, my symptoms have worsened, so I have decided to undergo surgery.
Now that I have moved to the northern part of Taiwan, there are many hospitals, and I couldn't find much information online.
I hope you can provide me with some direction on which doctor is an authority in this type of surgery.
After all, this is a lifelong issue for my legs, and I do not want to randomly choose someone for surgery without sufficient information.
I appreciate your advice.
Thank you.

Dr. Shi Guozheng reply Orthopedics
If there is no degeneration or pain in the knee joints, surgery for bow legs is not necessary.
If surgery is required, a pre-operative assessment is essential.
In the Taipei area, orthopedic departments at medical centers such as National Taiwan University Hospital, Veterans General Hospital, and Chang Gung Memorial Hospital have specialists who perform this type of surgery.

When considering the correction of O-shaped legs (genu varum), it's essential to first understand the underlying issues and the potential treatment options available. O-shaped legs can lead to various complications, including knee pain, joint misalignment, and even issues with mobility over time. Given your description of persistent pain and the feeling of misalignment, it is wise to pursue surgical intervention, especially since conservative treatments have not provided relief.
In Taipei, there are several reputable orthopedic surgeons who specialize in the correction of O-shaped legs. One of the most recognized institutions for orthopedic care is National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH). The orthopedic department there has a team of experienced surgeons who can evaluate your condition and recommend the best course of action. Dr. Chen, who is noted for his expertise in knee deformities, could be a good starting point for your consultation.
Another option is Taipei Medical University Hospital, where you can find specialists in pediatric and adult orthopedic surgery. They have a comprehensive approach to treating leg deformities and can provide both surgical and non-surgical options tailored to your specific needs.
When you visit an orthopedic surgeon, they will likely perform a thorough examination, including X-rays, to assess the degree of your O-shaped legs and any associated joint issues. The typical surgical procedure for correcting O-shaped legs is called osteotomy, where the bone is cut and realigned to achieve a more normal alignment. This procedure can significantly alleviate pain and improve function, but it is essential to discuss the risks and benefits with your surgeon.
Regarding insurance coverage, in Taiwan, the National Health Insurance (NHI) may cover part of the costs associated with orthopedic surgeries, including osteotomies for leg deformities. However, the extent of coverage can vary based on specific circumstances, so it would be beneficial to inquire directly with your healthcare provider or the hospital's billing department.
In addition to surgical options, there are also non-surgical methods that may provide some relief, such as physical therapy, orthotic devices, and specific exercises aimed at strengthening the muscles around the knee. However, given your description of the severity of your symptoms, it seems that surgery may be the most effective solution.
In summary, if you are considering surgery for O-shaped legs, I recommend consulting with a specialist at a reputable hospital like NTUH or Taipei Medical University Hospital. They can provide a comprehensive evaluation and discuss the best treatment options for your situation. Remember, it is crucial to choose a surgeon with experience in this specific area to ensure the best possible outcome for your long-term health and mobility.
