Diet After Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Hello, on the first day, I had my upper right and lower right wisdom teeth extracted (they were not impacted, but due to difficulty in cleaning, they had cavities and had caused pain before, so the doctor recommended extraction).
The procedure involved anesthesia for about twenty minutes, and the extraction was completed without stitches.
I was prescribed anti-inflammatory and pain relief medication, and I have been applying ice packs (although I personally do not have swelling or pain).
On the first night, I experienced occasional pain.
On the second day, I continued taking medication and applying ice packs, rinsing my mouth with a mixture of salt and water, and brushing my teeth.
My diet currently consists of porridge and water.
I would like to know when I can expect to return to a normal diet? Thank you (occasionally, when I open my mouth wide, I feel a slight pain, and I also feel it when applying ice packs).

After undergoing wisdom tooth extraction, it's crucial to follow a specific diet to ensure proper healing and minimize discomfort. The first 24 hours post-surgery are particularly important, as your body begins the healing process. During this time, you should stick to a soft diet that avoids any hard, crunchy, or spicy foods that could irritate the extraction site.
In the initial phase, consuming liquids and soft foods is recommended. Foods like broth, smoothies, yogurt, applesauce, and mashed potatoes are excellent choices. You mentioned that you are currently eating porridge and drinking water, which is appropriate. It's also advisable to avoid using straws, as the suction can dislodge the blood clot that forms in the extraction site, leading to a painful condition known as dry socket.

As for when you can return to a normal diet, it generally varies from person to person. Most individuals can start reintroducing more solid foods into their diet within 3 to 7 days after the extraction, depending on their comfort level and the extent of the surgery. If you experience any pain or discomfort while trying to eat solid foods, it’s best to revert to softer options until you feel ready to progress.
Here are some additional tips to help you navigate your post-extraction diet:
1. Hydration: Stay well-hydrated, but avoid carbonated beverages and alcohol for at least 48 hours after the procedure. Stick to water, herbal teas, or clear broths.

2. Temperature of Foods: Avoid very hot or very cold foods, as they can cause discomfort. Room temperature or slightly warm foods are ideal.

3. Nutritional Balance: While you are on a soft diet, try to include a variety of nutrients. Incorporate protein sources like scrambled eggs or soft tofu, and include fruits and vegetables that can be easily mashed or blended.

4. Gradual Transition: As you begin to feel better, gradually introduce more solid foods into your diet. Start with softer solids like bananas, cooked vegetables, and soft bread before moving on to harder foods.

5. Monitor Symptoms: Pay attention to how your body responds. If you notice increased pain, swelling, or any unusual symptoms, consult your dentist or oral surgeon.

6. Follow-Up Care: Keep up with any prescribed medications, such as pain relievers or antibiotics, and follow your dentist's instructions regarding oral hygiene. Gentle rinsing with salt water can help keep the extraction site clean.

In summary, while you can typically start to eat more normally within a week, listen to your body and proceed at a pace that feels comfortable for you. If you have any concerns or if pain persists, don’t hesitate to reach out to your dental care provider for advice. They can provide personalized recommendations based on your healing progress.
