Regarding unusual odors?

Hello doctor, a few days ago I masturbated and then went to sleep.
I was very busy and tired from work, so I didn't shower until two days later.
Later, I noticed a white fluid coming from the glans, and there is a slight odor.
Could this be an infection of some kind?

Dr. Du Shixi reply Urology

Hello: It should be sufficient to clean with plain water a couple more times.
If the skin becomes red, please seek medical attention.
Wishing you good health.

When it comes to unusual odors and discharge from the penis, particularly after a period of sexual activity or masturbation, there are several potential causes to consider. The presence of a white discharge accompanied by an unusual odor can be indicative of a few different conditions, some of which may require medical attention.

Firstly, it is important to understand that the male genital area is home to various bacteria and microorganisms, which can sometimes lead to infections. One common cause of a white discharge is a condition known as balanitis, which is inflammation of the glans (the head of the penis). Balanitis can occur due to poor hygiene, irritation from soaps or lotions, or infections, including yeast infections or sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The discharge associated with balanitis is often accompanied by redness, swelling, and discomfort.

Another possibility is a sexually transmitted infection, such as gonorrhea or chlamydia. These infections can cause a purulent (pus-like) discharge that may be white or yellowish and can have a foul odor. It is crucial to note that STIs can be asymptomatic in some individuals, meaning that one might not experience any other symptoms apart from the discharge.

In addition to infections, the presence of smegma, a combination of dead skin cells, oils, and moisture, can also lead to a white discharge and an unpleasant odor. Smegma can accumulate under the foreskin in uncircumcised men, and if not cleaned regularly, it can lead to irritation and infection.

Given your description of the symptoms, it is advisable to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can perform a physical examination and may recommend tests, such as a urinalysis or swab of the discharge, to determine the underlying cause. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential to prevent complications and to ensure proper management of any potential infections.

In the meantime, maintaining good hygiene is crucial. Gently cleaning the genital area with mild soap and water can help reduce the risk of irritation and infection. Avoid using harsh soaps or products that may cause further irritation.

In conclusion, while the symptoms you are experiencing could be due to a variety of causes, including infections or hygiene-related issues, it is important to consult a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Ignoring these symptoms could lead to more serious health issues, so it is best to address them promptly.
