Does Gui Lu Er Xian Jiao Really Repair Joints? Expert Insights - Traditional Chinese Medicine

Gui Lu Er Xian Jiao

Dear Doctor: Does Gui Lu Er Xian Jiao have the effect of repairing bones and muscles? Is its efficacy quite good? Recently, I am considering purchasing the Huatuo brand "medicinal grade" version containing two ingredients (tortoise shell and deer antler).
I am 50 years old, and my limbs, knees, and soles of my feet are sore due to occupational overexertion.
I want to take this for maintenance, but it is not cheap.
Could you please tell me if it really has restorative functions? In what situations is it not suitable to take? Thank you, Doctor.

Linda, 50~59 year old female. Ask Date: 2019/04/19

Dr. Yan Sumei reply Traditional Chinese Medicine

Dear Linda,
Gui Lu Er Xian Jiao has effects in preventing and treating osteoporosis, increasing bone density, anti-aging, and combating fatigue.
It is effective for maintaining the health of your limbs and joints; however, if the joints are already worn or deformed, Gui Lu Er Xian Jiao cannot restore them.
Since Gui Lu Er Xian Jiao significantly replenishes Qi and blood, it should not be taken during times of inflammation, such as with a cold, throat inflammation, urinary tract infections, or poor liver and kidney function.

Wishing you health and peace!
Sincerely,
Yen Su-Mei, Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Nantou Hospital

More Info

Gui Lu Er Xian Jiao, a traditional Chinese medicine formulation made from turtle shell (Gui Ban) and deer antler (Lu Jiao), is often marketed for its purported benefits in repairing joints and alleviating pain associated with musculoskeletal issues. While many individuals report positive experiences with this remedy, it is essential to understand its effects based on scientific evidence and traditional practices.

Efficacy of Gui Lu Er Xian Jiao
1. Traditional Use: In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Gui Lu Er Xian Jiao is believed to nourish the kidneys, strengthen bones, and improve overall vitality. It is often recommended for conditions like joint pain, weakness, and fatigue. The ingredients, particularly deer antler, are thought to have properties that promote healing and regeneration of tissues.

2. Scientific Evidence: While there are anecdotal reports and some studies suggesting that components of Gui Lu Er Xian Jiao may have beneficial effects on joint health, robust clinical trials are limited. The active compounds in deer antler, such as glucosamine and chondroitin, are known to support cartilage health, but the extent of their effectiveness in joint repair remains a subject of ongoing research.
3. Mechanism of Action: The formulation is believed to work by enhancing blood circulation, reducing inflammation, and providing essential nutrients that support joint health. However, the exact mechanisms through which it may "repair" joints are not well-documented in scientific literature.

Considerations Before Use
1. Age and Health Status: At 50 years old, if you are experiencing joint pain due to occupational strain, it is crucial to consider a comprehensive approach to treatment. While Gui Lu Er Xian Jiao may offer some relief, it should not replace conventional treatments or therapies recommended by healthcare professionals.

2. Potential Side Effects: As with any supplement, there may be side effects or interactions with other medications. Common concerns include allergic reactions, gastrointestinal discomfort, or interactions with anticoagulants. It is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new supplement, especially if you have underlying health conditions or are taking other medications.

3. Contraindications: Individuals with certain conditions, such as autoimmune diseases, or those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, should exercise caution. Additionally, if you have a history of allergies to animal products, particularly from turtles or deer, you should avoid this formulation.

4. Cost vs. Benefit: Given the price of high-quality formulations like the Hua Tuo brand, it is essential to weigh the potential benefits against the cost. If you decide to try it, monitor your symptoms closely and consider combining it with other treatments, such as physical therapy, exercise, or dietary changes that support joint health.

Conclusion
In summary, while Gui Lu Er Xian Jiao may provide some benefits for joint health, particularly in the context of traditional Chinese medicine, its efficacy is not universally established in scientific literature. It may serve as a complementary approach to managing joint pain, but it should not be viewed as a standalone solution. Always consult with a healthcare professional to create a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to your specific needs and health status.
