Gui Lu Er Xian Jiao
Hello: I have been diagnosed by a physician with patellar chondromalacia (the cartilage in my knee is unevenly thick and thin, and I have valgus deformity).
I am currently undergoing treatment, and my condition has improved significantly.
However, I have heard suggestions that taking Gui Lu Er Xian Jiao (a traditional Chinese medicine) may promote cartilage growth.
Is this really effective? Or would it be better to take collagen instead? Thank you!

Your question: The response is as follows: 1.
You have chondromalacia patellae (the cartilage in the knee is unevenly thick, with a valgus deformity), and you are currently undergoing treatment, which has improved significantly.
Taking Gui Lu Er Xian Jiao may increase the chances of cartilage growth; it has been popular for hundreds of years, is widely used, has few side effects, and is relatively reliable.
2.
Collagen is a recent product primarily used in facial masks, and its efficacy requires further investigation.
It is recommended to use Gui Lu Er Xian Jiao.
Finally, wishing you well.

The question regarding whether Gui Lu Er Xian Jiao (龜鹿二仙膠) promotes cartilage growth in knee osteoarthritis is a complex one. Gui Lu Er Xian Jiao is a traditional Chinese medicine that is often touted for its potential benefits in promoting joint health and alleviating symptoms associated with conditions like osteoarthritis. However, the scientific evidence supporting its efficacy in promoting cartilage growth specifically is limited.
Knee osteoarthritis is characterized by the degeneration of cartilage, which can lead to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. The treatment options for knee osteoarthritis typically include physical therapy, weight management, pain relief medications, and in some cases, surgical interventions. While some supplements, such as glucosamine and chondroitin, have been studied for their potential benefits in joint health, the results are mixed, and they do not necessarily promote new cartilage growth.
Regarding Gui Lu Er Xian Jiao, while it may contain ingredients that are believed to nourish the kidneys and promote blood circulation, which are principles in traditional Chinese medicine, there is insufficient clinical evidence to conclusively state that it can regenerate cartilage. Most of the claims surrounding its effectiveness are anecdotal rather than scientifically validated.
On the other hand, collagen supplements, including collagen peptides and hydrolyzed collagen, have gained popularity for their potential benefits in joint health. Some studies suggest that collagen supplementation may help improve joint pain and function, possibly by providing the building blocks for cartilage repair. However, like many supplements, the effectiveness can vary from person to person, and more rigorous research is needed to establish definitive benefits.
In summary, while Gui Lu Er Xian Jiao may offer some symptomatic relief for knee osteoarthritis, its ability to promote cartilage growth is not well-supported by scientific evidence. If you are considering using it or any other supplement, it is essential to consult with your healthcare provider to ensure it aligns with your treatment plan and does not interfere with any medications you may be taking. Additionally, focusing on a comprehensive approach that includes physical therapy, appropriate exercise, and possibly weight management can be more beneficial for managing knee osteoarthritis effectively.
In conclusion, while traditional remedies can play a role in holistic health management, relying solely on them for cartilage regeneration in knee osteoarthritis may not be the most effective strategy. Instead, consider integrating evidence-based treatments and lifestyle modifications to optimize your joint health.
