Worry and fear?

Hello Doctor, I feel like I might have hypochondria.
I have never engaged in sexual intercourse, but I often worry about contracting sexually transmitted infections (STIs) after reading certain reports.
Even after seeing a doctor and getting a clean bill of health, I still feel something is off, or I worry that I might develop something in the future.
I find myself checking daily, and if I see even a slight redness, I become extremely anxious.
For instance, I had a small abrasion recently, and although the doctor assured me it was nothing, I can't stop thinking about it.
I also read that excessive masturbation might lead to premature ejaculation, which makes me anxious about whether I will experience that in the future.

Could you please advise me on how to manage these negative thoughts? Sometimes I find myself googling things, but the more I read, the more negative and fearful I become.
I often worry about future issues and tend to create psychological stress for myself.
The doctor I visited told me not to scare myself, but even though I know it probably won't happen, I still find myself preoccupied with these thoughts, which is very distressing.

Dear FGH, thank you for your question.
I apologize for the delayed response.
Regarding the sexually transmitted infections (STIs) you mentioned, generally speaking, transmission is unlikely without sexual intercourse, even with direct genital contact.
It is normal for the male genitalia to exhibit red spots due to increased blood circulation.
However, the key issue in your case seems to be your tendency towards anxiety and obsessive thinking.
I recommend seeking further evaluation from a mental health professional who can provide medication and psychological counseling to help improve your situation.
Best wishes!

Overcoming health anxiety can be a challenging journey, especially when it manifests as an overwhelming fear of illness or disease. It’s important to recognize that what you’re experiencing is not uncommon, and many people struggle with similar feelings. Here are some strategies that may help you manage your worries about illness and reduce the impact of health anxiety on your daily life.

Understanding Health Anxiety
Health anxiety, often referred to as hypochondria, involves excessive worry about having a serious illness, even when medical evaluations show no significant health issues. This anxiety can stem from various sources, including past experiences, exposure to health-related information, or even a general tendency towards anxiety. The cycle of worry often leads to compulsive behaviors, such as frequent checking of symptoms or seeking reassurance from healthcare professionals, which can paradoxically reinforce the anxiety.

Strategies for Managing Health Anxiety
1. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): This is one of the most effective treatments for health anxiety. CBT helps you identify and challenge irrational thoughts and beliefs about your health. A therapist can guide you through exercises to reframe your thinking and reduce the power of negative thoughts.

2. Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: Practicing mindfulness can help you stay grounded in the present moment rather than getting lost in worries about the future. Techniques such as deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, or meditation can help calm your mind and reduce anxiety levels.

3. Limit Health-Related Research: While it’s natural to seek information, excessive googling about symptoms can exacerbate anxiety. Set boundaries for yourself regarding how much time you spend researching health issues. Consider designating specific times for checking information, and then focus on other activities.

4. Journaling: Keeping a journal can be a helpful way to process your thoughts and feelings. Write down your worries, and then challenge them by writing down evidence that contradicts those fears. This can help you gain perspective and reduce the intensity of your anxiety.

5. Focus on What You Can Control: Shift your focus from worrying about potential illnesses to taking proactive steps for your health. This could include maintaining a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and getting enough sleep. Engaging in healthy behaviors can empower you and reduce feelings of helplessness.

6. Seek Support: Talking to someone you trust about your feelings can provide relief. Whether it’s a friend, family member, or therapist, sharing your worries can help you feel less isolated. Support groups, either in-person or online, can also be beneficial as they connect you with others who understand what you’re going through.

7. Professional Help: If your anxiety is significantly impacting your daily life, consider seeking help from a mental health professional. They can provide tailored strategies and, if necessary, discuss medication options that may help manage your anxiety.

8. Practice Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself. Understand that it’s okay to feel anxious and that you’re not alone in this struggle. Acknowledge your feelings without judgment, and remind yourself that it’s a process to overcome these worries.

Conclusion
Overcoming health anxiety is a gradual process that requires patience and persistence. By implementing these strategies, you can begin to reduce the grip that health worries have on your life. Remember, it’s essential to consult with healthcare professionals when you have genuine health concerns, but it’s equally important to address the underlying anxiety that can distort your perception of health. With the right tools and support, you can find a healthier balance and reclaim your peace of mind.
