Post-Varicocelectomy
Hello, doctor.
I have a few questions:
1.
I have stage II left-sided varicocele and noticed two weeks post-surgery that there seems to be a visible vertical line of blood vessels on the left side of the scrotum when it is expanded.
Is this normal?
2.
Sometimes there is a significant size difference between the left and right testicles.
Is this normal?
3.
After the surgery, I had bruising and itching in the scrotum.
I applied Meikang ointment, and after two weeks, the redness and swelling have subsided, but I still experience tolerable itching, and the left testicle has slight pain.
Is this part of the normal recovery process after surgery?

Dr. Du Shixi reply Urology
Hello: 1) Normal 2) After surgery, the muscles may lose elasticity, which is normal.
3) After surgery, some people may experience pain, soreness, or itching, and bruising is also common; this is normal.
It is recommended that if the skin appears normal, no ointment is needed, just keep the area dry and wear loose-fitting pants.
Wishing you good health.

More Info
Post-varicocele surgery recovery can vary significantly among individuals, and it is essential to understand what symptoms are typical and what may require further evaluation. Here’s a comprehensive overview addressing your concerns:
1. Visible Blood Vessels Post-Surgery: After varicocele surgery, it is not uncommon to see some changes in the appearance of the scrotum, including visible blood vessels. The presence of a prominent vertical vein in the left scrotum may be due to residual swelling or changes in blood flow as the body heals. However, if these veins appear significantly engorged or if there is associated pain, it may warrant a follow-up with your surgeon to rule out any complications such as recurrence of varicocele or other vascular issues.
2. Size Discrepancy Between Testes: It is also common for patients to notice a difference in size between the left and right testicles after surgery. This can be due to swelling, which is a normal part of the healing process. The left testicle may appear larger or different in shape temporarily as the body adjusts post-surgery. However, if the size difference persists or if there is significant discomfort, it is advisable to consult your healthcare provider to ensure that there are no underlying issues.
3. Bruising, Itching, and Pain: Bruising and itching are typical symptoms following varicocele surgery. The use of topical ointments like Meikang cream can help alleviate itching and promote healing. It is normal for the bruising to take time to resolve, and itching may persist as the skin heals. Mild discomfort or pain in the left testicle can also occur as part of the recovery process. However, if the pain intensifies or is accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, swelling, or changes in urination, it is crucial to seek medical attention.
Recovery Timeline and Recommendations
The recovery period after varicocele surgery typically spans several weeks. Here are some general guidelines to aid in your recovery:
- Rest and Activity: It is essential to balance rest with light activity. Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for at least a few weeks post-surgery to prevent complications. Gradually reintroduce normal activities as tolerated.
- Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage discomfort. If prescribed medications are not effective, consult your doctor for alternative pain management strategies.
- Follow-Up Appointments: Regular follow-ups with your surgeon are crucial to monitor your recovery. These visits allow for the assessment of any unusual symptoms and ensure that healing is progressing as expected.
- Signs to Watch For: Be vigilant for signs of complications, including increased swelling, severe pain, fever, or any unusual discharge from the surgical site. If any of these occur, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
- Gradual Return to Normal Activities: As you recover, gradually increase your activity level. Listen to your body and avoid pushing yourself too hard too soon.
In conclusion, while some discomfort and visible changes are normal after varicocele surgery, it is essential to remain observant and proactive about your recovery. If you have any concerns or if symptoms persist beyond what is expected, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance. Your health and comfort during this recovery phase are paramount, and addressing any issues early can lead to a better overall outcome.
