Post-circumcision care
Hello doctor, I am currently recovering from a circumcision.
A few days after the procedure, I could still see the coronal sulcus on the top of my penis, but after a few more days, it seems to be covered by swollen skin and is no longer visible.
I am hesitant to push it out for fear of affecting the wound.
Is this situation concerning, or will the coronal sulcus naturally reappear once the swelling subsides?
Ben, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2019/07/08
Dr. Du Shixi reply Urology
Hello: It's okay as long as there is no inflammation or redness.
Wishing you good health.
The main thing is to pay attention to cleanliness and dryness.
If it does not improve after two weeks, you should return for a follow-up.
Maintain a light diet.

More Info
After undergoing circumcision, it is common to have concerns about the recovery process and the appearance of the penis, particularly regarding the coronal sulcus (the groove at the base of the glans). Here’s what you can expect during your recovery and some insights into your current situation.
Understanding Post-Circumcision Recovery
1. Initial Healing Phase: After circumcision, the penis will go through several stages of healing. In the first few days, you may notice swelling and some bruising, which is normal. The swelling can obscure the coronal sulcus, making it less visible. This is typically due to edema (fluid accumulation) in the tissues surrounding the surgical site.
2. Swelling and Appearance: The swelling you are experiencing can indeed cause the coronal sulcus to appear less prominent or even hidden. This is a temporary condition. As the swelling subsides, which usually occurs within a week or two, the anatomical features of the penis, including the coronal sulcus, should become more defined again.
3. Avoiding Pressure: It is wise to avoid pushing or manipulating the area too much during the healing process. Doing so could potentially disrupt the healing tissue or cause additional swelling or bleeding. Gentle care is advised, and you should follow any specific instructions given by your surgeon regarding cleaning and handling the area.
4. Signs of Complications: While some swelling is normal, you should be vigilant for signs of complications. These include excessive redness, increased pain, discharge that is not clear or yellowish (which could indicate infection), or any unusual changes in the appearance of the surgical site. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is crucial to contact your healthcare provider.
5. Follow-Up Care: Make sure to attend any follow-up appointments with your surgeon. They will assess your healing progress and can provide reassurance or further instructions based on your specific situation.
6. Timeframe for Recovery: Generally, most of the swelling should resolve within the first two weeks. Full healing can take several weeks, and during this time, the appearance of the penis will continue to change as swelling decreases and the tissues heal.
Conclusion
In summary, your current observation of the coronal sulcus being less visible due to swelling is a common occurrence after circumcision. It is advisable to be patient and allow time for the swelling to decrease naturally. Avoid manipulating the area, and keep an eye out for any signs of complications. If you have any concerns or if the swelling does not improve, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance. Your recovery is important, and ensuring that you are healing properly will help you achieve the best outcomes post-surgery.
