Accidental Exposure to Minoxidil 5%: What You Need to Know - Pharmacology

Minoxidil 5% topical solution

Today, while using Kirkland Signature Minoxidil 5%, I accidentally got some near my eyes.
After that, when I wiped my face with water, some of it flowed into my mouth, and I tasted a bitter flavor and swallowed (possibly the hair growth solution followed the water flow into my mouth).
I then spat several times and still tasted the bitterness (not sure if the hair growth solution continued to flow into my mouth).
Finally, I rinsed my mouth.
Should I be concerned about this? Thank you.

Niming, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2019/08/13

Dr. Hou Fangmin reply Pharmacology

Hello Sir:
1.
Minoxidil 5% (Kirkland Signature Minoxidil 5%) contains inactive ingredients such as alcohol, propylene glycol, and purified water.
Both alcohol and propylene glycol can be irritating, so if the hair growth solution accidentally reaches your mouth, please drink more water to help metabolize and eliminate it.
The amount that may have reached your mouth should be minimal, so drinking extra water is fine.
2.
Minoxidil is the main ingredient in hair growth solutions and is originally a medication for hypertension.
It works by utilizing the side effect of hypertrichosis (increased body hair growth, with hair becoming longer, thicker, and darker).
3.
When using Minoxidil products, please avoid contact with your eyes.
In case of accidental contact, rinse your eyes immediately with plenty of cool water.
4.
If you experience redness, inflammation, infection, stinging, or pain on your scalp, you should discontinue use.
Finally, I wish you health and happiness.

More Info

Accidental exposure to Minoxidil 5% can be concerning, especially when it comes into contact with sensitive areas such as the eyes or mouth. Minoxidil is primarily used as a topical treatment for hair loss, and while it is generally safe when used as directed, accidental exposure can lead to some unwanted effects.

What to Know About Minoxidil
Minoxidil is a vasodilator that works by increasing blood flow to the hair follicles, thereby promoting hair growth. It is available in various formulations, including a 5% solution commonly used for male pattern baldness. While it is effective for its intended use, it is important to follow the application instructions carefully to avoid unintended exposure.

Potential Effects of Accidental Exposure
1. Eye Exposure: If Minoxidil accidentally gets into the eyes, it can cause irritation. Symptoms may include redness, burning, and discomfort. It is crucial to rinse the eyes thoroughly with clean water or saline solution for at least 15 minutes. If irritation persists, seek medical attention.

2. Oral Exposure: Ingesting Minoxidil, even in small amounts, can lead to systemic effects. Symptoms of ingestion may include dizziness, increased heart rate, and hypotension (low blood pressure). The bitter taste you experienced is likely due to the active ingredient in Minoxidil. If you swallowed a significant amount, it is advisable to contact a healthcare professional or poison control center for guidance.

3. Gastrointestinal Symptoms: Vomiting or nausea can occur after accidental ingestion. If you continue to feel unwell, or if you experience severe symptoms such as chest pain or difficulty breathing, seek medical attention immediately.

Recommendations
- Immediate Action: Since you experienced accidental exposure, it is essential to monitor yourself for any unusual symptoms. If you feel unwell or have any concerning symptoms, do not hesitate to seek medical help.

- Prevention: To avoid future incidents, ensure that you apply Minoxidil in a controlled environment, away from your face and eyes. Use a dropper or applicator that minimizes the risk of spillage.

- Consultation: If you have any ongoing concerns about the exposure or if you experience any adverse effects, consult with a healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice and treatment if necessary.

Conclusion
While accidental exposure to Minoxidil 5% can be alarming, taking prompt action and monitoring your symptoms can help mitigate any potential risks. Always remember to handle topical medications with care, and if in doubt, consult a medical professional for guidance. Your health and safety are paramount, and being informed about the products you use is crucial in preventing accidents and ensuring effective treatment.
