Regarding saw palmetto and its association with erectile dysfunction?
Hello Doctor, I have mild androgenetic alopecia, so I started taking saw palmetto and African plum.
I have been taking saw palmetto for about 2 weeks and African plum for about 2 months.
I noticed that my erections have quickly diminished and become soft without stimulation.
I have already stopped using them and found some foreign literature indicating that some individuals experience sexual function side effects even after discontinuation.
My question is, will I be able to return to my previous state after stopping the supplements? Thank you.

Hello: These types of medications are classified as dietary supplements, but their effects are similar to those of medications like Ropinirole and Pramipexole.
They may contain similar natural components.
Just like Ropinirole, these issues are not very common, and if they occur, discontinuation of the medication should be followed by a few months of observation to determine if recovery is possible.
Personally, I have not encountered such issues with Pramipexole, but theoretically, the likelihood of recovery should be quite high.
Wishing you good health.

Saw Palmetto, a herbal supplement commonly used for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and hair loss, has garnered attention for its potential side effects, particularly concerning sexual health. Your experience with erectile dysfunction (ED) after taking Saw Palmetto is not uncommon, as some studies suggest that this supplement can inhibit the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a potent androgen that plays a crucial role in male sexual function.
DHT is indeed a male hormone, and it is essential for various physiological functions, including libido and erectile function. By reducing DHT levels, Saw Palmetto may inadvertently lead to decreased sexual desire and erectile difficulties. The reported side effects of Saw Palmetto include sexual dysfunction, which can manifest as reduced libido, erectile difficulties, and even changes in penile size, although the latter is less commonly documented.
In your case, after taking Saw Palmetto for about two weeks, you noticed a significant decline in your erectile function, which has understandably caused you concern. It is important to note that while some individuals report persistent sexual side effects even after discontinuing the supplement, many others find that their sexual function returns to baseline levels once they stop taking it. The timeline for recovery can vary widely among individuals, ranging from a few days to several weeks or even months.
If you have already stopped taking Saw Palmetto and are experiencing ongoing issues, it would be prudent to consult with a healthcare professional, preferably a urologist or an endocrinologist. They can help assess your situation more thoroughly, possibly conducting tests to evaluate hormone levels and other factors that may be contributing to your erectile dysfunction.
Additionally, lifestyle factors such as stress, anxiety, and overall health can also significantly impact erectile function. Engaging in regular physical activity, maintaining a balanced diet, and managing stress through relaxation techniques or therapy can be beneficial.
Regarding your concern about whether your penis will return to its original size, it is essential to understand that any perceived changes in size are often temporary and related to blood flow and erectile function rather than actual anatomical changes. Once normal erectile function is restored, you should expect to see a return to your previous size during erections.
In summary, while Saw Palmetto can lead to sexual side effects, many individuals experience recovery after discontinuation. It is crucial to monitor your symptoms and seek medical advice if they persist. Your health and well-being are paramount, and addressing any underlying issues with a healthcare provider can help you regain confidence in your sexual health.
