After applying azelaic acid, how long should I wait before applying moisturizer?
I currently have hyperpigmentation on my face and I'm applying azelaic acid.
My routine is: 1.
apply toner 2.
apply azelaic acid 3.
wait 10 minutes and then apply whitening lotion.
Can I change the order to: 1.
apply azelaic acid 2.
wait 10 minutes, then apply toner followed immediately by whitening lotion? After applying azelaic acid, do I need to wait 10 minutes before applying whitening lotion, or can I apply it immediately? I read online that the whitening lotion applied after azelaic acid should not contain acids; how can I find out if the lotion I’m using contains acids?

It is recommended to apply all skincare products first, and then apply azelaic acid.
You need to check the ingredients to know.

When using azelaic acid, it's essential to understand the proper application sequence and timing to maximize its benefits while minimizing potential irritation. Azelaic acid is a topical treatment commonly used for conditions like acne and hyperpigmentation. It works by reducing inflammation, unclogging pores, and inhibiting melanin production, making it effective for treating dark spots and uneven skin tone.
Your current routine involves applying a toner, followed by azelaic acid, and then waiting 10 minutes before applying a whitening lotion. This is a reasonable approach, as allowing the azelaic acid to absorb fully before applying other products can enhance its effectiveness. However, you are considering changing the order to apply azelaic acid first, waiting 10 minutes, and then applying toner followed by the whitening lotion.
While this new sequence is not inherently wrong, it may not be the most effective way to use these products. The primary concern is that toners often contain ingredients that can alter the pH of your skin, which might affect the efficacy of azelaic acid if applied immediately afterward. Therefore, it's generally recommended to apply azelaic acid directly to clean skin and allow it to absorb before layering other products.
Regarding the waiting period after applying azelaic acid, a 10-minute wait is a good practice. This allows the product to penetrate the skin effectively. After this waiting period, you can apply your whitening lotion. However, if you choose to apply toner after azelaic acid, it’s advisable to wait a bit longer to ensure that the azelaic acid has had sufficient time to work.
As for the concern about using a whitening lotion that contains acids, it’s crucial to check the ingredient list of your products. Look for terms like "alpha hydroxy acids" (AHAs), "beta hydroxy acids" (BHAs), or "fruit acids," which indicate the presence of acids in the formulation. If you are unsure, you can consult with a dermatologist or skincare professional who can help you identify suitable products that do not interfere with azelaic acid.
In summary, the recommended routine would be to apply azelaic acid directly to clean skin, wait for about 10 minutes, and then apply your whitening lotion. If you prefer to use toner, consider applying it before the azelaic acid, allowing it to dry completely before moving on to the next step. Always ensure that your whitening lotion is free from any active acids that could potentially irritate your skin when used in conjunction with azelaic acid. If you experience any irritation or adverse reactions, it’s best to consult with a dermatologist for personalized advice tailored to your skin's needs.
