Post-circumcision care
Hello doctor, I would like to ask if the penis can swell after circumcision? If so, how long does it usually take for the swelling to subside? Because now it seems to be thicker during erections compared to before the surgery, I would like to inquire about this.

Hello: Due to circulation issues, there may be swelling for a period of about 2-4 weeks.
Circulation will gradually improve.
Wishing you good health.

More Info
After a circumcision, it is quite common for the penis to experience some swelling. This swelling is typically a result of the surgical procedure itself, which involves cutting away the foreskin and can lead to inflammation in the surrounding tissues. The degree of swelling can vary from person to person, depending on factors such as the surgical technique used, individual healing responses, and any pre-existing conditions.
In the immediate aftermath of the surgery, it is normal for the penis to appear larger than usual due to swelling. This can sometimes give the impression that the penis has increased in size, particularly in terms of girth. However, this is usually temporary. The swelling typically begins to subside within a few days to a week after the procedure. Most patients will notice a significant reduction in swelling within the first week, and by two to three weeks post-surgery, the penis should return to its normal size.
It is important to monitor the healing process closely. If the swelling persists beyond a couple of weeks or is accompanied by other symptoms such as severe pain, redness, or discharge, it may indicate complications such as infection or hematoma (a localized collection of blood outside of blood vessels). In such cases, it is crucial to consult with a healthcare provider for further evaluation and management.
Regarding the perception of increased girth during erections, this can be attributed to the removal of the foreskin, which may have previously covered part of the shaft. With the foreskin removed, the shaft may appear more prominent, leading to the impression of increased size. However, this does not reflect an actual increase in the size of the penis itself.
In summary, swelling after circumcision is a common and expected part of the healing process. It usually resolves within a few weeks, and any significant changes in size during this time are likely due to temporary swelling rather than permanent changes. If you have concerns about your recovery or any unusual symptoms, it is always best to reach out to your healthcare provider for personalized advice and reassurance.
