The appearance of the abdomen is asymmetrical?
Hello Doctor, I lost about 35 kilograms a year ago, but I have slowly regained about 5 kilograms this year.
Recently, during acupuncture sessions, the traditional Chinese medicine practitioner noticed that when I lie down, the fat on my left side is more pronounced than on my right side.
Could this be due to uneven fat distribution from weight gain? It feels soft to the touch, and there are no hard lumps.
I also don't have any discomfort, and my basic blood tests for blood sugar, cholesterol, and triglycerides are all normal! Two years ago, before my weight loss, an ultrasound showed severe fatty liver (with liver function indices elevated to 60).
Two weeks ago, my blood tests showed a liver function index of 9, and last year it was 10! Does this indicate that my fatty liver condition has improved?

Dr. Ke Fangxu reply Surgery
Rapid weight loss often leads to uneven fat distribution, which is a common phenomenon.
Restoring firmness may require assistance from a plastic surgeon.
It is a positive sign that liver function indices have returned to normal, indicating potential improvement in fatty liver.
A follow-up ultrasound can be performed to confirm this.

The concern regarding uneven belly appearance and potential weight gain is a common issue that many individuals face, especially after significant weight loss. In your case, having lost around 35 kilograms and then regaining about 5 kilograms, it is understandable to notice changes in body composition, particularly in the abdominal area.
Firstly, it is important to recognize that the distribution of fat in the body can vary significantly from person to person. Factors such as genetics, hormonal balance, and lifestyle choices all play a role in how fat is distributed. The observation that your left side appears to have more fat than the right could indeed be related to weight gain, but it is also possible that it is a normal variation in body composition. As you mentioned, the fat feels soft and there are no hard lumps, which is a positive sign indicating that there is no immediate cause for concern regarding underlying health issues.
Regarding your previous diagnosis of severe fatty liver disease, it is encouraging to hear that your liver function tests have improved significantly, with your liver function index dropping from 60 to 9 over the past two years. This improvement suggests that your liver health is indeed getting better, likely due to your weight loss and lifestyle changes. Fatty liver disease is often associated with obesity and metabolic syndrome, and losing weight can significantly reduce the amount of fat in the liver, thereby improving liver function.
As for the asymmetry in your abdomen, it is not uncommon for individuals to experience uneven fat distribution after weight loss. This can be due to several factors, including the way fat is lost from different areas of the body, the elasticity of the skin, and even muscle tone. If you have been less active or have not engaged in targeted abdominal exercises, it is possible that the muscles on one side may not be as toned as those on the other, contributing to the uneven appearance.
To address your concerns, consider the following recommendations:
1. Exercise Regularly: Incorporating a balanced exercise routine that includes both cardiovascular and strength training can help improve muscle tone and potentially reduce the appearance of uneven fat distribution. Focus on core exercises that target the abdominal muscles, as well as overall body workouts.
2. Monitor Your Diet: Maintaining a balanced diet that is rich in whole foods, lean proteins, healthy fats, and plenty of fruits and vegetables can help manage weight and support overall health. Be mindful of portion sizes and try to avoid high-calorie, low-nutrient foods.
3. Stay Hydrated: Adequate hydration is essential for overall health and can help reduce water retention, which may sometimes contribute to a bloated appearance.
4. Consult a Specialist: If you continue to have concerns about the asymmetry or if you notice any changes in your body that are alarming, it may be beneficial to consult with a healthcare professional or a registered dietitian. They can provide personalized advice based on your health history and current condition.
5. Patience and Consistency: Changes in body composition take time, especially after significant weight loss. Be patient with yourself and stay consistent with your healthy habits.
In conclusion, while weight gain can contribute to changes in body appearance, the unevenness you are observing may also be influenced by other factors. Given your improved liver function and overall health, it seems you are on the right track. Focus on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and consider incorporating exercises that promote balance and strength in your core muscles.
