Is drinking green tea every day harmful to the body?
Hello Doctor: I drink green tea every day, but I'm not sure if drinking it regularly has any negative effects on my health.
In what situations or for what types of patients should green tea be avoided? Are there any foods or medications that should not be taken together with green tea? Thank you for your hard work.

Hello! Green tea has three types of side effects.
One affects the absorption of iron from food, so it is not recommended to drink it during or immediately after meals.
However, if the food contains a large amount of vitamin C or meat, it can counteract the effect of green tea on iron absorption.
Another side effect affects the absorption of vitamin B1 (thiamine), which indirectly prevents the utilization of vitamin B3 (niacin) and leads to its excessive excretion.
To mitigate this, it is advisable to avoid consuming green tea during or immediately after meals, or to supplement with B-complex vitamins.
The third side effect comes from the caffeine contained in tea.
Consuming large amounts of green tea or its extracts can cause abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, restlessness, insomnia, and tremors.
There have been reports that excessive consumption of green tea or its extracts by pregnant women may lead to sudden infant death syndrome.
However, as long as it is not consumed in excess, the digestive aid, anti-cancer, and antioxidant (including anti-aging) properties of green tea can outweigh these side effects.
Additionally, there are reports suggesting that mild iron deficiency anemia may be associated with increased longevity, so supplementation may not be necessary.
Personally, I am a tea drinker.
Best regards, Dr.

More Info
Drinking green tea daily can have both benefits and potential drawbacks, depending on individual health conditions and consumption levels. Green tea is widely recognized for its health benefits, including its antioxidant properties, potential anti-cancer effects, and ability to aid digestion. However, excessive consumption can lead to some adverse effects.
Potential Benefits of Green Tea
1. Antioxidant Properties: Green tea is rich in polyphenols, particularly catechins, which are powerful antioxidants. These compounds can help reduce oxidative stress in the body, potentially lowering the risk of chronic diseases.
2. Weight Management: Some studies suggest that green tea may aid in weight loss by enhancing metabolic rate and fat oxidation.
3. Heart Health: Regular consumption of green tea has been associated with improved cardiovascular health, including lower cholesterol levels and reduced risk of heart disease.
4. Blood Sugar Regulation: There is some evidence that green tea may help regulate blood sugar levels, which could be beneficial for individuals with insulin sensitivity or diabetes.
Potential Drawbacks of Daily Consumption
1. Iron Absorption: Green tea can inhibit the absorption of non-heme iron (the type found in plant-based foods). Therefore, it is advisable to avoid drinking green tea during or immediately after meals, especially for individuals with iron deficiency or anemia. Consuming vitamin C-rich foods alongside meals can help mitigate this effect.
2. Vitamin B1 Absorption: Green tea may also affect the absorption of thiamine (vitamin B1), which can indirectly impact the utilization of other B vitamins. Again, timing your tea consumption away from meals can help.
3. Caffeine Content: Green tea contains caffeine, which can lead to side effects such as insomnia, jitteriness, and digestive issues if consumed in large quantities. Pregnant women should be particularly cautious, as excessive caffeine intake has been linked to adverse pregnancy outcomes.
4. Potential Drug Interactions: Green tea can interact with certain medications, including blood thinners and some antidepressants. If you are on medication, it is essential to consult with a healthcare provider regarding the safety of consuming green tea.
Who Should Avoid Green Tea?
Certain individuals may need to limit or avoid green tea:
- People with Iron Deficiency Anemia: As mentioned, green tea can hinder iron absorption.
- Individuals with Certain Heart Conditions: Those with specific heart conditions should consult their doctor, as caffeine can affect heart rhythm.
- Pregnant or Breastfeeding Women: Due to caffeine content and potential effects on fetal development, moderation is key.
- People with Kidney Issues: High consumption of green tea may not be advisable for individuals with kidney disease due to its potential to affect kidney function.
Conclusion
In moderation, daily green tea consumption is generally safe for most healthy adults and can be part of a balanced diet. However, it is crucial to be mindful of the timing of consumption, especially concerning meals and medications. If you have specific health concerns or conditions, it is always best to consult with a healthcare professional to tailor advice to your individual needs. As with any dietary component, balance and moderation are key to reaping the benefits while minimizing potential risks.
