Loxol SR Extended-Release Tablets (Ambroxol)
I have allergies and whenever I catch a cold, I tend to cough and need to use an inhaler to recover.
In the past, I have only taken Aminophylline and Acetylcysteine for treatment, but this time I also added Loxol SR (Ambroxol) to my regimen.
Usually, my medication works well, and I can recover in a month without much nasal discharge.
However, this time I have a lot of nasal discharge and am constantly blowing my nose; the mucus is clear and thick.
I would like to know if this could be a side effect of Loxol SR (Ambroxol).
Thank you.

Dr. Hou Fangmin reply Pharmacology
Hello, sir: Please be very careful with colds lately, especially when entering and exiting hospitals.
Make sure to wash your hands frequently; otherwise, it can be very difficult if you end up in quarantine.
1.
Aminophylline is a bronchodilator used for asthma, and common side effects include rash and nausea.
2.
Acetylcysteine, an expectorant and mucolytic agent, is quite simple in its action of reducing airway viscosity, with very few side effects.
3.
Loxol SR is a long-acting expectorant that should not be crushed.
It helps eliminate thick and congested secretions from the airways, effectively aiding in mucus clearance and promoting easier breathing.
Reported side effects include nasal discharge, fatigue, dry mouth, constipation, and difficulty urinating; however, these side effects vary from person to person and are rare.
If you have taken this medication before without experiencing nasal discharge and are now having this issue, you may want to discuss it with your doctor.
Finally, I wish you peace, joy, and good health.

More Info
Ambroxol, marketed as Loxol SR, is a mucolytic agent commonly used to help relieve cough and improve mucus clearance in conditions such as bronchitis and other respiratory disorders. While it is generally well-tolerated, some individuals may experience side effects, including increased nasal congestion or changes in mucus production.
In your case, it is possible that the increased nasal congestion you are experiencing could be related to the use of Ambroxol. Although Ambroxol is intended to thin mucus in the airways, it can sometimes lead to increased mucus production in other areas, such as the nasal passages, particularly if you have a pre-existing condition like allergic rhinitis or non-allergic rhinitis. This could explain the transparent, thick nasal discharge you are noticing.
Allergic rhinitis, which you mentioned you have, can be exacerbated by various factors, including changes in weather, exposure to allergens, and even certain medications. When you take Ambroxol, it may stimulate mucus production in the respiratory tract, which could lead to a sensation of increased nasal congestion, especially if your nasal passages are already sensitive due to allergies.
Additionally, the combination of Ambroxol with other medications you are taking, such as aminophylline and acetylcysteine, could also play a role in how your body responds. Each of these medications has its own mechanism of action, and their combined effects might lead to unexpected changes in mucus production or nasal congestion.
If you suspect that Ambroxol is causing your increased nasal congestion, it would be advisable to discuss this with your healthcare provider. They may suggest adjusting your medication regimen or exploring alternative treatments that could be more suitable for your condition. It is also important to consider other factors that might contribute to your symptoms, such as environmental allergens, changes in humidity, or even viral infections that could be coinciding with your use of Ambroxol.
In the meantime, you might find relief from nasal congestion through various supportive measures. These can include using saline nasal sprays to help moisturize and clear your nasal passages, staying well-hydrated, and using a humidifier in your living space to maintain optimal humidity levels. Over-the-counter antihistamines may also help alleviate symptoms of nasal congestion, but it is essential to consult with your healthcare provider before adding any new medications to your routine.
In summary, while Ambroxol can be beneficial for managing cough and mucus clearance, it may also contribute to increased nasal congestion in some individuals, particularly those with underlying allergic conditions. It is crucial to monitor your symptoms and communicate with your healthcare provider to ensure that you receive the most effective and appropriate treatment for your situation.
