Labial swelling
Hello, around May 2019 (approximately 7 months pregnant), I experienced swelling and pain in my labia.
I visited Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, and the doctor diagnosed it as a type of folliculitis.
In October and November 2019, it recurred twice, and I consulted different doctors each time.
Each doctor had varying opinions; some suggested it was a Bartholin's gland issue, while others thought it resembled a pimple.
I underwent fluid aspiration for testing, which showed no bacterial infection.
Since December 2019, my labia have been swollen but not very painful.
Should I see a doctor? The area feels hard, and previous treatments with antibiotics and injections have not resolved the issue.
How should I proceed? Thank you.

Hello, it's difficult to determine the issue without a visual examination, but since you are not experiencing any discomfort right now, it is fine to monitor the situation for the time being.
Wishing you good health.

More Info
Labial swelling, or swelling of the labia, can be a concerning symptom for many individuals, especially when it is accompanied by pain or discomfort. Understanding the potential causes, symptoms, and treatment options is essential for managing this condition effectively.
Causes of Labial Swelling
1. Folliculitis: As you mentioned, folliculitis is an inflammation of the hair follicles, which can lead to painful, swollen areas on the labia. This condition can be caused by bacterial infections, irritation from shaving, or friction from clothing.
2. Bartholin's Gland Cysts: The Bartholin's glands are located on either side of the vaginal opening and can become blocked, leading to cyst formation. If these cysts become infected, they can cause significant swelling and pain.
3. Infections: While you noted that your tests did not indicate a bacterial infection, other types of infections, such as yeast infections or sexually transmitted infections (STIs), can also cause labial swelling.
4. Dermatological Conditions: Conditions such as lichen sclerosus or vulvar dermatitis can lead to swelling and discomfort in the labial area. These conditions may require specific treatments to manage symptoms effectively.
5. Allergic Reactions: Allergies to soaps, detergents, or personal care products can cause localized swelling and irritation.
6. Trauma or Injury: Any trauma to the area, including vigorous sexual activity or injury from tight clothing, can result in swelling.
Symptoms
Symptoms accompanying labial swelling can vary but may include:
- Pain or tenderness in the swollen area
- Redness or warmth
- Discharge (if an infection is present)
- Itching or irritation
- Hardness or firmness in the swollen area
Treatment Options
1. Medical Evaluation: Given that you have seen multiple doctors and received varying diagnoses, it may be beneficial to seek a consultation with a gynecologist who specializes in vulvar disorders. A thorough examination and possibly imaging studies may be warranted to determine the exact cause of your symptoms.
2. Antibiotics: If there is a suspicion of a bacterial infection, a course of antibiotics may be necessary. However, since you mentioned that antibiotics have not been effective in your case, this may not be the appropriate course of action.
3. Warm Compresses: Applying warm compresses to the affected area can help alleviate pain and reduce swelling. This is a simple home remedy that can provide relief.
4. Sitz Baths: Taking sitz baths in warm water can soothe the area and promote healing, especially if there is irritation or discomfort.
5. Topical Treatments: Depending on the diagnosis, topical treatments such as corticosteroids or antifungal creams may be prescribed to reduce inflammation or treat infections.
6. Surgical Intervention: In cases where cysts or abscesses are present, surgical drainage may be necessary. This would typically be performed by a healthcare professional.
7. Avoid Irritants: Identifying and avoiding potential irritants, such as certain soaps or hygiene products, can help prevent further irritation and swelling.
Conclusion
Given your ongoing symptoms and the lack of resolution despite various treatments, it is advisable to seek further medical evaluation. A specialist can provide a more targeted approach to your condition, ensuring that you receive the appropriate care. It is essential to communicate all your symptoms and previous treatments to your healthcare provider to facilitate an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment plan. Remember, persistent symptoms should not be ignored, and seeking a second opinion or further evaluation is always a valid option.
