Five days post circumcision?

Hello, Doctor.
I apologize for the interruption.
I am a patient who underwent a circumcision 19 days ago.
After a few days of care, I have not experienced any bleeding or swelling.
However, today while applying medication, I noticed what appears to be a bifurcated suture just below the glans.
I experienced sharp pain in that area when I accidentally had an erection this morning.
I attempted to pull on it, but it was painful, and I was afraid that pulling it might cause bleeding, so I stopped.
Additionally, I started taking showers last week, and I would like to ask if I should soak it in warm water to soften it.
Lastly, I want to thank you for your guidance over the past two weeks; I have greatly benefited from it.
Wishing you good health and all the best!

Hello: You can soak it in warm water for 10-15 minutes; it will soften and fall off in 1-3 days.
Don't worry, and wish you good health.

Post-circumcision care is crucial for ensuring proper healing and minimizing discomfort after the procedure. It’s great to hear that you are 19 days post-surgery and have not experienced any bleeding or significant swelling. However, it’s understandable that you have concerns regarding the sensation of pain and the presence of what appears to be a split suture near the glans.

First, let’s address the issue of the suture you mentioned. It’s not uncommon for patients to notice suture material after circumcision, especially if absorbable sutures were used. These sutures typically dissolve on their own over a period of time, but if you notice any unusual pain, increased redness, or discharge from the area, it’s essential to consult your surgeon. The pain you feel during an erection could be due to the tension on the sutures or the healing tissue, and it’s advisable to avoid any activities that may exacerbate this discomfort until you have been evaluated.

Regarding your question about bathing, it is generally recommended to keep the area clean and dry. When you do wash, using warm water is beneficial as it can help soften any crusting or scabbing that may have formed. However, it’s important to avoid soaking the area in hot water or using harsh soaps, as these can irritate the sensitive skin and potentially disrupt the healing process. A gentle rinse with warm water should suffice, and you can gently pat the area dry afterward.

In terms of pain management, if you experience discomfort, over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen can be helpful, but make sure to follow the dosage instructions on the package or those provided by your healthcare provider. If the pain persists or worsens, it’s crucial to reach out to your doctor for further evaluation.

Additionally, it’s important to monitor for any signs of infection, which can include increased redness, swelling, warmth, or discharge that has a foul odor. If you notice any of these symptoms, seek medical attention promptly.

As you continue your recovery, it’s also beneficial to avoid any activities that may put strain on the area, such as vigorous exercise or sexual activity, until you have fully healed and received clearance from your healthcare provider.
Lastly, it’s wonderful to hear that you have found the online consultations helpful. Open communication with your healthcare provider is key to addressing any concerns you may have during your recovery. If you have any further questions or if your symptoms change, don’t hesitate to reach out for professional advice.

In summary, keep the area clean, monitor for any unusual symptoms, manage pain as needed, and consult your healthcare provider if you have any concerns about the sutures or your healing process. Wishing you a smooth and speedy recovery!
