Post-circumcision care?

Hello doctor, I have a question.
It has been over two months since I had my circumcision, and the swelling has not improved.
In this swollen condition, is it safe to engage in sexual activity with my girlfriend? If it is possible, what precautions should I take? Additionally, I have a smoking habit; during this swelling period, is it really necessary to avoid smoking completely?

Hello: 1) If there is swelling after sexual activity, you should reduce the frequency, and lubrication may be necessary.
2) It is best to avoid any penetration at all.
Wishing you good health.

More Info

After undergoing circumcision, it is not uncommon to experience some swelling in the surgical area, which can persist for several weeks. In your case, since it has been over two months and you are still experiencing swelling, it is advisable to consult your healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. Persistent swelling could indicate complications such as infection or improper healing, which may require medical attention.

Regarding sexual activity during this period of swelling, it is generally recommended to avoid sexual intercourse until the swelling has significantly reduced and you are no longer experiencing discomfort. Engaging in sexual activity while there is still swelling can lead to increased irritation, pain, and potentially hinder the healing process. If you do choose to engage in sexual activity, it is crucial to be gentle and communicate openly with your partner about any discomfort you may experience. Additionally, using lubrication can help minimize friction and discomfort during intercourse.

As for smoking, it is well-documented that smoking can adversely affect the healing process after any surgical procedure, including circumcision. Nicotine constricts blood vessels, which can reduce blood flow to the surgical site and delay healing. Therefore, it is highly advisable to refrain from smoking during your recovery period. If you are struggling with nicotine cravings, consider seeking support through smoking cessation programs or discussing alternative methods with your healthcare provider.

In summary, while it may be physically possible to engage in sexual activity with swelling, it is not recommended due to the potential for increased discomfort and complications. Prioritize your healing by avoiding sexual activity until you have fully recovered. Additionally, quitting smoking or at least reducing your intake during the recovery phase will significantly benefit your healing process. If you have any concerns or questions about your recovery, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for personalized advice and support.
