Side effects of Vicodin?
Hello, doctor.
A while ago, I suspected that I had adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and sought medical help, but the doctor diagnosed me with depression and lack of motivation.
I was prescribed Wellbutrin 150 mg/day, which I have been using for a month.
I also have anxiety issues, and after researching the side effects of the medication, I experienced a panic attack the day after starting the medication before going to sleep (feeling like I was losing control, worrying about suicide, and having a rapid heartbeat; I may have experienced this once before).
I have been using the medication for 10 days now and have had three panic episodes (the second one occurred around 4 AM after waking up, and the third happened while driving on the highway, where I felt uncomfortable and tried to regulate my emotions but continued to feel chest tightness).
I often feel anxious and live under the shadow of panic.
I can manage well in the mornings after taking the medication, but I start to feel increasingly uncomfortable in the evenings.
Although I do feel more energetic during the day, I often feel emotionally fragile and hypersensitive, and sometimes I even feel more depressed than before (previously, I mostly felt down and unmotivated).
I frequently experience chest tightness, cramping, and nausea.
Of course, I want to improve my depression, but I am very worried that the situation will worsen with continued use.
I would like to ask the doctor if these side effects are normal, whether my panic is caused by personal psychological factors, and if I should continue taking the medication for the full month.

Hello Lawrence: Thank you for your question.
It seems that you haven't experienced this feeling of panic frequently before, but since starting the medication, you've had three episodes in ten days, which is likely a side effect of the medication.
Generally, the side effects of venlafaxine (Effexor) tend to improve after some time on the medication.
However, if you have been taking it for 2 to 3 weeks and the discomfort persists, it may be better to switch to another antidepressant.
Additionally, if you have a higher level of anxiety, venlafaxine may not be the most suitable medication for you, as it can potentially cause side effects related to anxiety and restlessness.
If you are feeling very uncomfortable, I recommend scheduling an earlier follow-up appointment with your doctor to discuss this.
Wishing you good health and safety!

It sounds like you are experiencing a challenging time with your mental health, particularly with the introduction of Wellbutrin (bupropion) into your treatment regimen. It's important to address both the potential side effects of the medication and the underlying anxiety and panic symptoms you are experiencing.
Wellbutrin is an atypical antidepressant that primarily affects the neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine. It is often prescribed for depression and can also be used to help with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and smoking cessation. While many patients find it beneficial, it can also lead to side effects, particularly during the initial stages of treatment or when the dosage is adjusted.
Common side effects of Wellbutrin include insomnia, dry mouth, dizziness, and increased anxiety or agitation. In some cases, patients may experience heightened feelings of anxiety or panic, especially if they have a pre-existing anxiety disorder. This could explain the panic attacks you are experiencing, particularly if they are occurring at night or in situations where you feel trapped or uncomfortable, such as driving on the highway.
The fact that you are feeling more emotionally sensitive and experiencing physical symptoms like chest tightness and nausea can be distressing. It's crucial to differentiate between side effects of the medication and the symptoms of anxiety or depression. Sometimes, the initial increase in energy and motivation from Wellbutrin can lead to a temporary increase in anxiety, especially if the underlying anxiety disorder is not adequately managed.
Given that you have experienced panic attacks multiple times since starting the medication, it is essential to communicate these concerns with your prescribing physician. They can assess whether the medication is the right fit for you or if adjustments need to be made. It’s also possible that your anxiety may require additional treatment, such as therapy or a different medication that specifically targets anxiety symptoms.
In terms of whether you should continue taking Wellbutrin for the full month, this is a decision best made in consultation with your healthcare provider. They may suggest continuing for a bit longer to see if your body adjusts to the medication, as some side effects can diminish over time. However, if the panic attacks and feelings of distress continue or worsen, it may be necessary to reconsider your treatment plan.
In the meantime, consider implementing some coping strategies for anxiety. Techniques such as deep breathing exercises, mindfulness meditation, and regular physical activity can help manage anxiety symptoms. Additionally, keeping a journal of your experiences with the medication, including any side effects and your emotional state, can provide valuable information for your doctor.
Lastly, if you ever feel that you are in immediate danger of harming yourself or experiencing severe distress, it is crucial to seek help right away. Reach out to a mental health professional or a crisis hotline for support.
In summary, while some of the symptoms you are experiencing may be related to Wellbutrin, it is essential to work closely with your healthcare provider to determine the best course of action for your mental health treatment. Open communication about your experiences will help ensure that you receive the most appropriate care.
