Ankylosing spondylitis and dietary supplements?
My husband has been taking medication for ankylosing spondylitis for about 20 years.
We have been married for 8 years and have been unable to conceive.
I would like to give him maca supplements, but I am unsure if it will interact with his prescription medications.
Does maca have any benefits for immune system abnormalities? Thank you.

Dr. Liao Lingmei reply Pharmacology
Hello: Maca, whether as food, dietary supplement, or nutritional supplement, generally shows research data indicating improvements primarily in the endocrine system, with limited evidence regarding improvements in the immune system.
The interaction between maca and prescription medications has not yet been established; however, a few studies suggest that if one is taking anticoagulants, special attention should be paid to any signs of bleeding after consuming maca.
Some potential endocrine disorders may also be related to diminished effects or recurrence of pre-existing conditions after consumption, but this has not yet been confirmed.
Since this product is not classified as a drug, the aforementioned warnings do not imply a strong relative toxicity, and one should not have overly high expectations.
Wishing you health and happiness!

Maca supplements, derived from the root of the Lepidium meyenii plant, have gained popularity for their potential health benefits, particularly in enhancing fertility and improving overall well-being. However, when considering the use of maca supplements for someone with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and fertility issues, it is essential to approach the topic with caution and an understanding of the underlying medical conditions.
Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic inflammatory disease primarily affecting the spine and the sacroiliac joints, leading to pain and stiffness. It is classified as a type of inflammatory arthritis and is associated with autoimmune responses. Patients with AS often require long-term medication to manage symptoms and prevent disease progression. Common treatments include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), and biologics.
Regarding the use of maca supplements, there is limited scientific evidence directly linking maca to improvements in ankylosing spondylitis. Some studies suggest that maca may have anti-inflammatory properties and could potentially support hormonal balance, which may indirectly benefit fertility. However, these claims are not robustly supported by clinical trials, particularly in the context of autoimmune diseases like AS.
When it comes to fertility, maca is often touted for its ability to enhance libido and improve sperm quality in men. Some studies have indicated that maca may increase sperm count and motility, which could be beneficial for couples trying to conceive. However, the effects of maca on fertility can vary from person to person, and more research is needed to establish its efficacy and safety in this regard.
One of your primary concerns is whether maca supplements could interact with your husband's existing medications for ankylosing spondylitis. While maca is generally considered safe for most individuals, it is crucial to consult with a healthcare provider before introducing any new supplement, especially for someone with a chronic condition. Maca may have mild hormonal effects, and since AS treatments often involve immunosuppressive medications, there could be potential interactions that need to be evaluated by a physician.
Additionally, it is important to consider the immune system's role in both ankylosing spondylitis and fertility. AS is characterized by an abnormal immune response, and while maca is thought to have adaptogenic properties that may help the body cope with stress, its direct impact on immune function in the context of AS is not well understood. Therefore, any supplement that claims to modulate immune function should be approached with caution, particularly in autoimmune conditions.
In summary, while maca supplements may offer some potential benefits for fertility, their role in managing ankylosing spondylitis is less clear. It is essential to have an open discussion with a healthcare provider who understands both the complexities of AS and the potential effects of supplements like maca. This will ensure that any treatment plan is safe, effective, and tailored to your husband’s specific health needs. Always prioritize evidence-based treatments and monitor any changes in symptoms or side effects closely when introducing new supplements into a treatment regimen.
