Wrist issues
Hello Dr.
Lu, last June I experienced wrist pain due to incorrect push-up form.
Although the pain was tolerable at the time, it worsened at the beginning of this year to the point where I cannot exert force; any effort, such as twisting motions (like opening a jar), causes pain.
An MRI revealed a TFCC tear.
I started rehabilitation in March, which includes ultrasound and electrical therapy.
While my wrist's range of motion has improved, I still cannot exert force without pain.
I would like to know if I can seek Traditional Chinese Medicine treatment, and which department should I visit (Acupuncture or Orthopedics)? Additionally, will combining rehabilitation with TCM treatment lead to faster recovery? How long might it take for my wrist to fully heal? Thank you for your response, Ms.
Lin.

Dr. Lü Bingcheng reply Traditional Chinese Medicine
Dear Ms.
Lin,
Regarding your wrist injury from last June and the rehabilitation you started in March this year (ultrasound and electrical therapy), I would like to share my personal views:
1.
You may consider seeking treatment from a qualified traditional Chinese medicine practitioner in your area for acupuncture and herbal medicine, in conjunction with your rehabilitation therapy, which could enhance the healing of your wrist.
2.
However, starting aggressive treatment for a TFCC (triangular fibrocartilage complex) tear more than six months after the injury may not be ideal.
Therefore, I cannot accurately assess when you will fully recover; however, please remain optimistic.
I recommend evaluating your condition after combining both Western and traditional medicine treatments.
3.
As for your rehabilitation therapy, does it include manual therapy or exercise therapy performed by a physical therapist, or is it limited to the aforementioned ultrasound and electrical therapy? I suggest incorporating manual therapy and strength training by a therapist, as this may lead to significant improvements in your condition.
I hope these personal insights are helpful to you.
Wishing you a speedy recovery and all the best!

More Info
Dear Ms. Lin,
Thank you for your inquiry regarding the use of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for your wrist pain recovery. Based on your description, it seems that you have been dealing with a TFCC (Triangular Fibrocartilage Complex) tear, which can indeed be quite painful and limit your wrist function. Your current rehabilitation efforts, including ultrasound and electrical therapy, are beneficial, but it’s understandable that you are seeking additional treatment options.
Traditional Chinese Medicine Approach
In TCM, wrist pain, especially due to injuries like a TFCC tear, can be treated through various methods including acupuncture, herbal medicine, and tuina (Chinese therapeutic massage). Here’s a breakdown of how TCM might approach your condition:
1. Acupuncture: This technique involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body to promote healing and alleviate pain. Acupuncture can help improve blood circulation in the affected area, reduce inflammation, and relieve pain. It is often used in conjunction with other treatments for a more comprehensive approach.
2. Herbal Medicine: TCM practitioners may prescribe herbal formulas that can help with pain relief and promote healing. Common herbs used for musculoskeletal injuries include *Du Huo Ji Sheng Tang* (for pain relief and strengthening) and *Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang* (to invigorate blood circulation). However, it is crucial to consult with a qualified TCM practitioner who can tailor the herbal treatment to your specific condition.
3. Tuina: This is a form of Chinese therapeutic massage that can help relieve muscle tension and improve circulation in the wrist area. It may be beneficial in conjunction with acupuncture and herbal treatments.
4. Dietary Recommendations: TCM also emphasizes the importance of diet in recovery. Consuming foods that are rich in nutrients and promote blood circulation, such as ginger, garlic, and green leafy vegetables, can support your healing process.
Duration of Recovery
The recovery time for a TFCC tear can vary significantly based on the severity of the injury and the treatment methods employed. Generally, with appropriate treatment, including TCM, rehabilitation, and possibly PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) therapy, you might expect a recovery period ranging from a few weeks to several months. It’s important to note that while TCM can enhance recovery, it is often most effective when used in conjunction with Western medical treatments.
Integrating TCM with Rehabilitation
You asked whether combining TCM with your current rehabilitation would expedite your recovery. The answer is yes; integrating TCM can provide a holistic approach to healing. While Western rehabilitation focuses on physical therapy to restore function, TCM can address underlying issues such as pain management and inflammation, potentially leading to a more comprehensive recovery.
Which TCM Department to Visit
For your specific condition, you may consider visiting either an acupuncture department or a TCM orthopedic department (often referred to as "Traumatology" in some clinics). Both can provide the necessary treatments for your wrist pain.
Conclusion
In summary, TCM offers various methods that can complement your current rehabilitation efforts for your wrist pain. By consulting with a qualified TCM practitioner, you can explore acupuncture, herbal medicine, and tuina to enhance your recovery. Remember to communicate openly with both your Western and TCM practitioners to ensure a coordinated approach to your treatment.
I wish you a smooth recovery and hope you find relief from your wrist pain soon.
Best regards,
