Possible Reasons for Delayed Period: Pregnancy or Herbal Medicine Effects? - Obstetrics and Gynecology

What is the reason?

Hello, doctor.
My last menstrual period was from April 29 to May 5, but today is May 27 and I still haven't gotten my period.
I usually have a cycle of 26 or 27 days.
Is it possible that the delay is due to trying traditional Chinese medicine for menstrual pain? My boyfriend and I have been using withdrawal method without condoms; could there be a possibility of pregnancy? Or is it just the effect of the Chinese medicine?

1.
For pregnancy concerns, please take a home pregnancy test or consult a gynecologist four weeks after sexual intercourse.

2.
There are many factors that can affect irregular menstrual cycles; it is recommended to see a gynecologist for evaluation.

3.
Withdrawal is not a highly effective method of contraception.

When it comes to a delayed period, there are several potential reasons to consider, including pregnancy and the effects of herbal medicine. Based on your timeline, if your last menstrual period was from April 29 to May 5, and you typically have a cycle of 26 to 27 days, it is indeed possible that you could be experiencing a delay due to various factors.

Firstly, let's discuss the possibility of pregnancy. If you and your boyfriend have been engaging in unprotected intercourse, even if it was through withdrawal (the "pull-out" method), there is still a risk of pregnancy. Sperm can be present in pre-ejaculatory fluid, and if any sperm were to enter the vagina, it could lead to fertilization. If your period is late, taking a home pregnancy test could provide clarity. These tests are generally reliable if taken after a missed period, as they detect the hormone hCG, which is produced during pregnancy.

On the other hand, you mentioned trying herbal medicine to alleviate menstrual pain. Herbal remedies can indeed affect the menstrual cycle, either by regulating it or causing delays. The impact of herbal medicine on your body can vary significantly based on the specific herbs used, your overall health, and how your body reacts to these substances. Some herbs may have hormonal effects that could delay ovulation or menstruation, leading to a longer cycle than usual.

Stress and lifestyle changes are also common culprits for a delayed period. Factors such as emotional stress, changes in weight, exercise habits, or even changes in your daily routine can influence your menstrual cycle. If you have been under any stress or have made significant lifestyle changes recently, this could also explain the delay.

If your period continues to be delayed, or if you experience any unusual symptoms such as severe pain, heavy bleeding, or other concerning signs, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional. They can provide a thorough evaluation, including a physical examination and possibly blood tests, to determine the underlying cause of your delayed period.

In summary, while pregnancy is a possibility given your circumstances, the effects of herbal medicine and other lifestyle factors should also be considered. A home pregnancy test can help clarify your situation, and if you have further concerns, seeking medical advice is always a good step. Remember, your health and peace of mind are paramount, so don't hesitate to reach out to a healthcare provider for personalized guidance.
