Is it suitable to use a foot massager for someone who has a history of a comminuted fracture near the ankle?
Hello doctor, about three years ago my father had an accident at a construction site, during which his left leg was severely injured, likely near the ankle or the sole of the foot.
I remember there was a support or possibly screws (which should be bioresorbable and eventually integrated with the tissue).
After recovery, he has been walking on his toes with his left foot, and this posture has likely been maintained for a long time, leading to occasional soreness in his foot, for which he receives injections for relief.
Recently, I purchased a Tokuyo foot massager for my mom and dad to use.
Given that my father had a comminuted fracture three years ago (which I believe has fully healed), I am unsure if it is suitable for him to use the foot massager.
The device can massage the soles of the feet, as well as the thighs and calves.
I am concerned that using the massager might cause harm, so I hope the doctor can help clarify this issue.
Thank you very much!

Dr. Chen Bochen reply Orthopedics
Hello Leonbin, it is acceptable to use a foot massager three years after a fracture.
The only concern is whether it feels comfortable for you personally; there is no need to worry about re-injuring the old injury.
If it feels good to use, then go ahead; if it feels uncomfortable, don’t force it.
Wishing you good health.

More Info
Using a foot massager after an ankle fracture recovery can be a beneficial practice, but it is essential to consider several factors before proceeding. Given your father's history of a severe ankle injury and the subsequent recovery process, there are both potential benefits and risks associated with using a foot massager.
Benefits of Foot Massagers
1. Improved Circulation: Foot massagers can enhance blood circulation in the feet and lower legs. This is particularly beneficial for individuals who may have reduced mobility or have been favoring one leg over the other due to pain or discomfort.
2. Pain Relief: Gentle massage can help alleviate muscle tension and soreness, which may be particularly helpful for your father if he experiences occasional pain in his foot or leg.
3. Relaxation and Stress Relief: The soothing effects of a foot massage can promote relaxation, which can be beneficial for overall well-being, especially if your father has been dealing with discomfort or stress related to his injury.
4. Range of Motion: Regular use of a foot massager may help improve flexibility and range of motion in the ankle and foot, which is crucial for recovery after an injury.
Risks and Considerations
1. Timing of Use: Since your father had a significant injury, it is crucial to ensure that he is well into his recovery phase before using a foot massager. If he is still experiencing pain or has not regained full mobility, it may be wise to consult with a healthcare professional before introducing massage therapy.
2. Intensity of Massage: The settings on the foot massager should be adjusted to a gentle level. Overly vigorous massage can lead to discomfort or exacerbate any lingering pain. It is essential to monitor how your father responds to the massage and to stop if he experiences any pain.
3. Underlying Conditions: If your father has any underlying conditions, such as neuropathy or circulatory issues, it is crucial to consult with a healthcare provider before using a foot massager. These conditions can affect how the body responds to massage.
4. Consultation with a Healthcare Provider: Given your father's history of a severe ankle injury, it is advisable to consult with his physician or physical therapist before using the foot massager. They can provide personalized recommendations based on his current condition and recovery status.
5. Gradual Introduction: If cleared by a healthcare provider, consider starting with short sessions of massage to see how your father responds. Gradually increasing the duration and intensity can help gauge comfort levels and avoid any adverse effects.
Conclusion
In summary, a foot massager can be a safe and effective tool for enhancing recovery and providing relief for your father, provided that he is well into his recovery phase and does not experience any pain during use. Always prioritize his comfort and consult with a healthcare professional to ensure that this practice aligns with his recovery goals. Regular monitoring and communication about how he feels during and after using the massager will help ensure that it remains a positive addition to his recovery routine.
