Is It Normal to Feel Dizzy After Strabismus Surgery? - Ophthalmology

Strabismus surgery

Hello, I would like to ask...
It has been 6 days since my strabismus surgery (left eye)...
When I wear my own prescription glasses to see things, I feel dizzy (similar to how a person without myopia feels when wearing someone else's glasses...
my vision becomes blurry).
Is this normal? Thank you!

Mina, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2020/07/16

Dr. Gao Pilin reply Ophthalmology

Hello Mina: Before the surgery, you may have been using only one eye for vision.
After the surgery, your left eye will be repositioned, allowing you to see with both eyes.
At this point, you will need to relearn how to fuse the images from both eyes, which is why you may experience this phenomenon.
After some time, as you adapt to using both eyes, your vision may improve.

We hope to have the opportunity to serve you.

More Info

Experiencing dizziness after strabismus surgery can be concerning, especially if it persists beyond the initial recovery period. Strabismus surgery, which aims to correct misalignment of the eyes, can lead to various postoperative symptoms, including discomfort, blurred vision, and sometimes dizziness.
Firstly, it is important to understand that after any eye surgery, including strabismus surgery, the eyes and the brain need time to adjust to the changes made during the procedure. The surgery may involve repositioning the eye muscles, which can temporarily affect how the eyes work together and how they perceive visual information. This adjustment period can lead to sensations of dizziness or visual disturbances, particularly when using corrective lenses like glasses.

In your case, feeling dizzy when wearing your glasses could be attributed to several factors:
1. Adjustment to Vision Changes: After surgery, your eyes may not align perfectly at first, and your brain is still learning to process the new visual input. This can create a sensation similar to wearing the wrong prescription glasses, leading to dizziness or a feeling of being off-balance.

2. Temporary Blurred Vision: Postoperative swelling or changes in the eye's surface can cause temporary blurred vision. If your glasses prescription was based on your pre-surgery vision, it might not be suitable for your current visual state, leading to discomfort and dizziness.

3. Muscle Fatigue: The eye muscles may be fatigued from the surgery and the adjustment process, which can also contribute to feelings of dizziness or discomfort when focusing on objects.

4. Underlying Conditions: If you have any pre-existing conditions that affect your vision or balance, these could be exacerbated by the surgery and contribute to your symptoms.

It is essential to follow up with your ophthalmologist or the surgeon who performed your strabismus surgery. They can assess your recovery progress, check for any complications, and determine whether your glasses prescription needs to be adjusted. They may also provide specific exercises or therapies to help with your recovery and alleviate dizziness.

In general, while some dizziness can be a normal part of the recovery process, it should not be severe or persistent. If you experience significant dizziness, visual disturbances, or any other concerning symptoms, it is crucial to seek medical advice promptly. Your healthcare provider can offer tailored recommendations based on your specific situation and ensure that your recovery is on track.

In conclusion, while mild dizziness can be a normal postoperative symptom after strabismus surgery, it is essential to monitor your symptoms and consult with your healthcare provider to rule out any complications and ensure proper recovery.
