Why do my eyes feel blurry after applying artificial tears?

I underwent laser vision correction surgery at the beginning of January this year, and it has been about six months since then.
Recently, my vision has become blurry, and after visiting a clinic, I was diagnosed with a corneal abrasion.
I was prescribed eye drops and non-preserved artificial tears in single-use vials.
However, after using the artificial tears, my vision became even blurrier after a few blinks.
Is this normal? Could it be related to the abrasion? How long can a corneal abrasion last, and will it have any long-term effects on my eyes? Can a corneal abrasion heal on its own?

Ping, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2020/07/30

Dr. Chen Anping reply Ophthalmology

Dear Miss Ping: A corneal abrasion can cause various discomforts, including blurred vision (the most common symptom).
It will not heal on its own, so careful treatment is necessary.

More Info

Experiencing hazy vision after using artificial tears can be concerning, especially following a recent laser eye surgery. Based on your description, it seems that you have been diagnosed with a corneal abrasion, which can indeed lead to symptoms such as haziness, discomfort, and increased tearing. Here’s a comprehensive explanation of the potential reasons behind your symptoms and some additional insights into corneal health.

Understanding Corneal Abrasion and Its Effects
A corneal abrasion is essentially a scratch or injury to the surface of the cornea, the clear front part of the eye. This condition can result from various factors, including contact lens wear, foreign objects in the eye, or even excessive rubbing. After laser eye surgery, the cornea is particularly sensitive and may be more prone to abrasions.

When you apply artificial tears, especially preservative-free ones, they are designed to lubricate the eye and provide relief from dryness. However, if your cornea is still healing from an abrasion, the artificial tears may not provide immediate relief. Instead, they might temporarily blur your vision due to the tears spreading unevenly over the damaged surface. This can create a hazy appearance as the tears mix with any debris or irregularities on the cornea.

Is This Normal?
It is not uncommon for patients with corneal abrasions to experience increased haziness after using artificial tears. The healing process can be gradual, and the presence of an abrasion can lead to fluctuating vision. If the artificial tears are not adequately hydrating the cornea or if there is still significant damage, you may notice that your vision remains cloudy even after application.

Healing Process and Duration
Corneal abrasions typically heal on their own within a few days to a week, depending on the severity of the injury. During this time, it is crucial to follow your eye care provider's recommendations, which may include using artificial tears, avoiding contact lenses, and possibly using antibiotic eye drops to prevent infection.

If your abrasion has not healed after a couple of weeks, or if you continue to experience significant discomfort or hazy vision, it is essential to return to your eye care professional for a follow-up examination. They may need to assess the healing process and determine if further treatment is necessary.

Recommendations for Management
1. Continue Using Artificial Tears: Stick with the preservative-free artificial tears as they are less likely to irritate your eyes. If you find that a particular brand is not working for you, consult your eye doctor for alternatives.

2. Avoid Rubbing Your Eyes: This can exacerbate the abrasion and delay healing. Be gentle when touching your face or adjusting your glasses.

3. Follow Up with Your Eye Doctor: If your symptoms persist or worsen, it’s vital to have a follow-up appointment. Your doctor may need to perform additional tests or provide different treatments.

4. Protect Your Eyes: Consider wearing sunglasses outdoors to shield your eyes from wind and bright light, which can further irritate a healing cornea.

5. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in your vision or discomfort levels. If you notice increased redness, pain, or discharge, seek medical attention promptly.

Conclusion
In summary, experiencing hazy vision after using artificial tears can be related to the healing process of a corneal abrasion. While it is not unusual, it is essential to monitor your symptoms and maintain communication with your eye care provider. With proper care and attention, most corneal abrasions heal effectively, restoring your vision and comfort. Always prioritize your eye health and seek professional guidance when in doubt.
