Waiting time for dentures after root canal treatment?
Hello, Doctor.
I would like to ask about the billing issue.
If a filling on a tooth that has undergone root canal treatment falls out, will I be charged a consultation fee again when I return to the clinic for a refill? After the root canal treatment, I scheduled a follow-up appointment for further treatment, but before that date, the filling came out, so I went back to the clinic for a refill.
Initially, the nurse did not charge me a consultation fee when I registered, but instead charged me after the refill was completed.
This time, it was just a simple refill of the cavity without any other treatment.
Is this reasonable? Thank you for your patience in reading this, and I appreciate your clarification.
Thank you.

Hello, Mimi: Whether a registration fee is charged varies by clinic, so you can inquire with the specific clinic you plan to visit to understand their fee structure.

In Taiwan, dental fees can vary significantly depending on the type of treatment, the clinic's policies, and whether the patient is covered by national health insurance. After undergoing a root canal treatment, patients may have concerns regarding additional costs, especially if they need further treatment due to complications such as a filling falling out.
When a patient undergoes a root canal treatment, the procedure typically involves cleaning out the infected pulp of the tooth and sealing it. After this treatment, a filling or crown is often placed to restore the tooth's function and aesthetics. If this filling falls out before the patient has their follow-up appointment for further treatment, the patient may need to return to the clinic for a repair.
In your case, it seems that you returned to the clinic to have the filling replaced before your scheduled follow-up appointment. The question of whether a consultation fee (掛號費) should be charged in this situation is a common concern. Generally, clinics have their own policies regarding consultation fees. In many cases, if a patient returns for a follow-up related to the same treatment, the clinic may waive the consultation fee, especially if the visit is solely for a minor repair like replacing a filling.
However, if the clinic's policy is to charge a consultation fee for any visit, regardless of the reason, then it may be considered reasonable for them to charge you after your repair. It is essential to clarify these policies with the clinic beforehand to avoid any confusion. If the nurse did not collect a fee at the time of your visit, it could be an oversight, or they may have deemed it unnecessary based on the nature of your visit.
In Taiwan, dental practices are required to provide transparent pricing, and patients should feel comfortable asking about costs upfront. If you feel that the charge was not justified, you could discuss this with the clinic's administration or seek clarification on their billing practices.
Moreover, if you are covered by the National Health Insurance (NHI), certain dental procedures may be partially subsidized, which could affect your out-of-pocket expenses. It’s advisable to check with your dentist or the clinic regarding what is covered under your insurance plan.
In summary, while it may seem unreasonable to charge a consultation fee for a simple filling replacement, it ultimately depends on the clinic's policies. Open communication with your dental provider about fees and treatment expectations is crucial to ensure a smooth experience. If you have further concerns about the charges or the treatment process, consider discussing them directly with your dentist or the clinic's management for clarification.
