Swelling and pain of the labia?

Hello, doctor.
At the end of July, after using the restroom, I felt pain on the left side of my vagina when wiping.
It improved after a few days, but recently the same area started to hurt again.
I took a look with my phone and noticed a round, swollen red bump on the left side of the labia minora, which is where the pain is located.
My discharge has been normal these past few days, and there is no itching (I have not had sexual experience).
Could this be vaginitis or a Bartholin's gland cyst? Thank you.

Vaginal infections can cause abnormal discharge, itching, fever, and lower abdominal pain, which are among the most common symptoms in women.
The causes are numerous, and treatment methods require comprehensive health education.
It is recommended to consult a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology for evaluation in an outpatient setting.

Labial swelling and pain can be concerning symptoms that may arise from various underlying conditions. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing localized pain and swelling in the left labia, particularly after wiping, which has recurred over a few days. The presence of a round, raised, red area between the urethra and the vaginal opening, along with the absence of abnormal discharge or itching, provides important clues for diagnosis.

One possible cause of your symptoms could be a Bartholin's gland cyst. The Bartholin's glands are located on either side of the vaginal opening and are responsible for secreting fluid that helps lubricate the vagina. If the duct of one of these glands becomes blocked, fluid can accumulate, leading to the formation of a cyst. This cyst may become inflamed or infected, resulting in localized pain and swelling. The pain you experience when wiping could be due to the pressure applied to the cyst during this action.

Another possibility is vulvar vestibulitis or vulvodynia, which refers to chronic pain in the vulvar area without an identifiable cause. This condition can cause discomfort during activities such as wiping, and it may be associated with localized tenderness. However, this typically presents with more persistent pain rather than intermittent episodes.

Infections, such as vulvovaginal candidiasis (yeast infection) or bacterial vaginosis, can also cause discomfort in the genital area, but these conditions usually present with additional symptoms such as itching, abnormal discharge, or odor. Since you mentioned that your discharge has been normal and there is no itching, these infections may be less likely.

It is also important to consider that localized trauma or irritation from wiping too hard or using irritating products (such as scented soaps or wipes) can lead to temporary swelling and pain. This could explain the intermittent nature of your symptoms.

Given that you have not had sexual experience, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are less likely, but they cannot be completely ruled out without further evaluation.
In conclusion, while Bartholin's gland cyst and vulvar vestibulitis are potential causes of your symptoms, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis. A thorough examination, including a pelvic exam, may be necessary to determine the exact cause of your labial swelling and pain. Treatment options will depend on the underlying cause and may include warm compresses, sitz baths, or, if a cyst is diagnosed, potential drainage if it becomes infected.
If the symptoms persist or worsen, or if you develop additional symptoms such as fever, increased swelling, or changes in discharge, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly. Your health and comfort are important, and a healthcare provider can offer the best guidance tailored to your specific situation.

In the female labial area, there are often some glands that can become inflamed, leading to pain. This can be treated with topical anti-inflammatory medications or oral medications. If the condition recurs frequently, surgical removal may be considered for a permanent solution.
