Ear drops clogged the entire ear?
A few days ago, I went to see an otolaryngologist due to severe ear pain and was diagnosed with otitis media.
The doctor prescribed me ear drops.
After applying the drops, I wanted to let them drain out after 10 minutes, and a little bit came out.
The next day, my ear felt completely blocked by the medication, and I can hardly hear what others are saying.
What should I do about this? Will the ear drops dry up on their own?

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology
Hello, it may be caused by the mixture of the medication and secretions in the ear canal.
If discomfort persists, it is advisable to return for an earlier consultation.
The physician can provide localized treatment to improve the condition.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

When dealing with ear drops, especially after treatment for conditions like otitis media (middle ear infection), it's important to understand how to properly administer them and what to expect afterward. Your experience of feeling like your ear is blocked after using ear drops is not uncommon, and there are several factors to consider.
First, it's essential to recognize that ear drops are designed to deliver medication directly into the ear canal. After instilling the drops, it's recommended to keep your head tilted for a few minutes to allow the medication to penetrate effectively. However, if you feel that the ear is blocked afterward, it could be due to a few reasons:
1. Residual Medication: After administering ear drops, some of the liquid may remain in the ear canal. This can create a sensation of fullness or blockage. Typically, any excess fluid should drain out naturally after a short period. If you notice that the fluid is not draining and you feel discomfort, you can gently tilt your head to the side or use a clean tissue to absorb any excess fluid.
2. Earwax Impaction: Sometimes, the use of ear drops can dislodge earwax, leading to a temporary blockage. If you have a history of earwax buildup, this could be contributing to your sensation of fullness. It's crucial not to use cotton swabs or other objects to dig into the ear canal, as this can push wax deeper and potentially cause injury.
3. Inflammation or Infection: If your ear was already inflamed due to an infection, the sensation of blockage may persist even after the medication is applied. Inflammation can cause swelling in the ear canal, which may lead to a feeling of pressure or fullness.
4. Drying of the Medication: Depending on the formulation of the ear drops, they may dry out over time. However, this process can vary, and some medications may leave a residue that can feel uncomfortable. If the sensation of blockage continues, it is advisable to consult your healthcare provider.
What to Do Next:
- Allow Time for Drainage: After applying ear drops, give it some time. If you still feel blocked after a few hours, try tilting your head to the side to encourage drainage.
- Warm Compress: Applying a warm compress to the affected ear can help alleviate discomfort and may promote drainage.
- Avoid Water Exposure: Until the sensation resolves, try to keep water out of your ear, especially when showering or swimming, as this can exacerbate the feeling of fullness.
- Consult Your Doctor: If the feeling of blockage persists for more than a day or two, or if you experience increased pain, discharge, or fever, it is essential to return to your healthcare provider. They may need to examine your ear to ensure that there is no underlying issue, such as a perforated eardrum or persistent infection.
In summary, while it is common to feel a sensation of fullness after using ear drops, it should gradually improve. If it does not, or if you have concerns about your symptoms, seeking medical advice is the best course of action. Your healthcare provider can assess your situation and determine if further treatment is necessary.
