Post-Surgery Concerns: Healing Issues After Penile Surgery - Urology

Post-operative issues following penile surgery?

Hello, doctor.

1) I underwent penile curvature correction surgery and circumcision on October 8th, and it has now been over three weeks.
The sutures seem to have been fully absorbed, but today while cleaning the wound, I noticed a noticeable groove at the left lower suture site.
Could this be due to a failure in healing, possibly from a split during the healing process? Should I return for a check-up with the doctor or possibly have it re-stitched? I'm a bit concerned about its appearance (as shown in the image: https://imgur.com/a/2o4CwG8).
2) Additionally, will the raised, granular appearance at the suture site eventually disappear or flatten out? Is this a common phenomenon? (as shown in the image: https://imgur.com/a/1gNZqcz).
3) I am still applying medication and covering the area with gauze.
Will the medication help improve the above conditions? Also, I am currently wearing looser underwear; how long should I wait before switching to more fitted underwear?

Hello: 1) A diagnosis cannot be made without examination in this setting.
This situation is common, as the genital area is prone to erection, and due to individual physiology, wounds may appear this way.
If there are high demands for clarification, it is advisable to discuss with a physician.
2) This is common and will become less noticeable over time.
3) Generally, it is recommended to keep the area bandaged for 5 to 7 days; some patients may choose to bandage for a longer duration.
As long as proper hygiene is maintained, there is no issue.
If there are no signs of irritation, fitted clothing can be worn.
Wishing you good health.

After undergoing penile surgery, particularly for conditions such as penile curvature correction and circumcision, it is common to have concerns regarding the healing process. Here are some insights and recommendations based on your questions:
1. Concerns About the Visible Suture Line: It is not uncommon to notice a visible line or groove at the suture site during the healing process. This can occur for several reasons, including the way the tissue has healed or if there was any tension on the sutures during the recovery phase. If the area appears to be healing but has a noticeable indentation, it may not necessarily indicate a complication, but it is essential to monitor it. If you are concerned about the appearance or if there are signs of infection (such as increased redness, swelling, or discharge), it would be prudent to return to your surgeon for an evaluation. They can assess whether the healing is progressing normally or if any intervention, such as re-suturing, is necessary.

2. Suture-Related Bumps: The presence of small, raised bumps at the suture line is a common occurrence after surgery. These can be due to several factors, including the body's natural healing response, scar tissue formation, or remnants of the sutures themselves. In many cases, these bumps will flatten out over time as the healing progresses. However, if they persist or become painful, it is advisable to consult your surgeon for further evaluation. They may provide treatments or recommendations to help improve the appearance of the area.

3. Medication and Dressing: Continuing to apply the prescribed ointment and keeping the area covered with a sterile dressing is crucial for promoting healing and preventing infection. The medication can help reduce inflammation and support the healing process. As for transitioning to tighter underwear, it is generally recommended to wear loose-fitting clothing during the initial healing phase to avoid irritation and pressure on the surgical site. You should consult your surgeon for personalized advice on when it is appropriate to switch to more fitted underwear, as this can vary based on individual healing rates and the specifics of your surgery.

Additional Considerations:
- Follow-Up Appointments: Regular follow-up appointments with your surgeon are essential to monitor your healing progress. If you notice any changes or have concerns, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider before your scheduled appointment.

- Signs of Complications: Be vigilant for any signs of complications, such as increased pain, swelling, redness, or discharge from the surgical site. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical attention promptly.

- Post-Operative Care: Continue to follow your surgeon's post-operative care instructions, including any recommendations for activity restrictions, hygiene practices, and medication use. Proper care can significantly impact your healing process and overall satisfaction with the surgical outcome.

In summary, while some concerns regarding the healing process after penile surgery are common, it is essential to maintain open communication with your healthcare provider. They can provide the best guidance tailored to your specific situation and ensure that your recovery proceeds smoothly.
