Neck Stiffness After Fall: Signs of Concussion and When to Seek Help - Surgery

Neck stiffness

On the evening of October 13th, I accidentally fell forward while doing a handstand and landed on my neck, hitting the back of my head.
My body was in a C-shape at the time.
I sat still for 5 minutes to recover and then rested before going to sleep.
The next day, I experienced mild headaches and neck stiffness, particularly difficulty looking up and turning my neck.
Should I be concerned about a concussion? Do I need to seek medical attention?

Experiencing neck stiffness and headaches after a fall, especially one that involves a significant impact to the head and neck, can indeed raise concerns about a concussion or other serious injuries. Concussions are a type of traumatic brain injury (TBI) that can occur when the brain is jolted or shaken inside the skull, often as a result of a blow to the head. The symptoms of a concussion can vary widely and may include headaches, neck pain, dizziness, confusion, and difficulty concentrating, among others.

In your case, the fact that you experienced neck stiffness and a headache the day after your fall is noteworthy. Neck stiffness can sometimes be associated with muscle strain or injury, particularly if the fall caused you to land awkwardly or if you tensed your neck muscles upon impact. However, it can also be a sign of more serious conditions, such as whiplash or even a concussion, especially if there are accompanying symptoms like confusion, memory issues, or balance problems.

Here are some signs and symptoms to watch for that may indicate a concussion or other serious injury:
1. Headache: A persistent or worsening headache can be a sign of a concussion.

2. Nausea or Vomiting: Feeling nauseous or actually vomiting after a head injury is concerning.

3. Dizziness or Balance Issues: Difficulty maintaining balance or feeling dizzy can indicate a concussion.

4. Confusion or Memory Problems: If you find it hard to remember the events surrounding the fall or feel confused, this is significant.

5. Sensitivity to Light or Noise: Increased sensitivity can be a symptom of a concussion.

6. Changes in Mood or Behavior: Irritability or unusual emotional responses can also be signs of a concussion.

Given that you are experiencing neck stiffness and headaches, it is advisable to seek medical attention. A healthcare professional can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include a neurological examination and possibly imaging studies like a CT scan or MRI to rule out any serious injuries such as fractures or bleeding in the brain.

In the meantime, it’s important to monitor your symptoms closely. If you experience any worsening of your condition, such as increased headache severity, confusion, or any new symptoms, you should seek emergency medical care immediately.
Rest is crucial after a head injury, but it’s equally important to avoid activities that could put you at risk for another injury. If you are diagnosed with a concussion, your doctor will likely recommend a period of physical and cognitive rest, followed by a gradual return to normal activities.

In summary, while neck stiffness and mild headaches can sometimes resolve on their own, they can also indicate a more serious issue. It’s best to err on the side of caution and consult with a healthcare provider to ensure your safety and well-being.
