Blurred vision
Hello, I have ankylosing spondylitis and recently developed iritis.
I started using steroid eye drops (Betamethasone 0.1%) and dilating drops on October 7, and continued until October 25.
The redness and pain have resolved, but I noticed that my vision is a bit blurry.
Will my vision recover after stopping the medication? Thank you.

Hello Ivy: The effects of mydriasis may impact vision, but after discontinuing the medication, vision should return to normal if there are no other issues.

When it comes to the use of steroid eye drops, such as Betamethasone (倍特明眼藥水), for conditions like iritis (虹彩炎), it is important to understand both the therapeutic effects and potential side effects associated with their use. In your case, you have been using these drops to manage inflammation related to your condition, and you are now experiencing some blurriness in your vision after discontinuing the medication.
Firstly, it is crucial to recognize that steroid eye drops are effective in reducing inflammation and controlling symptoms associated with eye conditions. However, they can also lead to side effects, including increased intraocular pressure, cataract formation, and, in some cases, temporary changes in vision. The blurriness you are experiencing could be attributed to several factors, including the residual effects of the inflammation, the impact of the medication, or even changes in the eye's refractive status during and after treatment.
In your situation, since you mentioned that the redness and pain have subsided, it is a positive sign that the inflammation is under control. The blurriness in vision may be temporary and could improve as your eye continues to heal. It is not uncommon for vision to fluctuate during the recovery process, especially after a period of inflammation. The eye may take some time to stabilize after the cessation of steroid treatment.
It is also worth noting that the use of dilating drops (散瞳) can contribute to temporary visual disturbances. These drops are used to widen the pupil and allow for a better examination of the eye, but they can also affect your ability to focus, leading to blurred vision. Once the effects of the dilating drops wear off, your vision should return to normal.
To answer your question directly: Yes, it is likely that your vision will improve after stopping the steroid eye drops, especially if there are no underlying complications. However, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If the blurriness persists or worsens, or if you experience any new symptoms such as increased pain, redness, or light sensitivity, it is crucial to follow up with your ophthalmologist. They may want to perform a thorough examination to rule out any complications or to assess the need for further treatment.
In summary, while it is reasonable to expect that your vision may improve after stopping the steroid eye drops, it is essential to remain vigilant and consult with your healthcare provider if you have any concerns. They can provide personalized advice based on a comprehensive evaluation of your eye health and the specific circumstances surrounding your condition. Remember, healing can take time, and patience is key in the recovery process.
