Sebaceous Glands on the Glans: Common Concerns and Care - Urology

Sebaceous glands of the genitalia

Hello Dr.
Du, I previously visited a urologist who mentioned that although circumcision is not necessary, I should clean the smegma thoroughly.
After showering today, I noticed a small spot near the urethral opening on the glans that looks like a pimple.
When I visited the urologist before, I was concerned about any unusual growths and showed the doctor this spot as well as a small bump on the shaft of my penis.
The doctor examined it with a light and said it was nothing to worry about, just sebaceous glands.
He advised that I should return only if it grows significantly or becomes painful.
However, I find it strange that after rinsing during my shower, I can't see it, but sometimes when I dry off, the glans appears wrinkled and I can see it, while at other times it disappears.
I have a few questions for you: Is it normal for sebaceous glands to appear on the glans? I can understand it on the shaft, but shouldn't the glans, which is usually covered by the foreskin, be smooth? Another question is, is it normal for the glans to appear a bit wrinkled when dry? Does the presence of sebaceous glands relate to my frequent masturbation? It seems like sometimes they become more noticeable, but then they disappear after a while.
I'm unsure if I need to undergo any further examinations.
Thank you for addressing my questions!

Dr. Du Shixi reply Urology

Hello: The skin can have glands, and it's important to keep it dry; there is no need to blow dry.
This is unrelated to masturbation.
Such glands may sometimes be prominent and at other times less visible, which is normal.
If there is any enlargement, please seek medical attention for an examination by a physician.
Wishing you good health.

Sebaceous glands, also known as oil glands, are a normal part of human anatomy and can be found in various locations on the body, including the glans penis. These glands produce sebum, an oily substance that helps to lubricate and protect the skin. It is common for individuals to have concerns about the appearance of their skin, especially in sensitive areas such as the genital region.
To address your questions:
1. Presence of Sebaceous Glands on the Glans: Yes, it is entirely normal for sebaceous glands to be present on the glans penis. While many people associate these glands with areas that are more covered by skin, such as the shaft of the penis, they can also be found on the glans. The appearance of small bumps or spots, which may resemble pimples or whiteheads, is often due to these sebaceous glands. They can become more noticeable due to factors such as hygiene, skin hydration, and even sexual activity.
2. Wrinkling of the Glans When Dry: The glans penis can appear wrinkled when it is dry, which is also a normal occurrence. The skin on the glans is sensitive and can change in appearance based on moisture levels. When the skin is hydrated, it tends to look smoother. Conversely, when it is dry, it may appear more wrinkled or shriveled. This is similar to how other areas of skin on the body can change appearance based on hydration levels.

3. Relation to Masturbation: The presence of sebaceous glands and their visibility can be influenced by various factors, including sexual activity and masturbation. Frequent stimulation can lead to temporary changes in the skin, including the appearance of these glands. However, it is important to note that masturbation itself does not cause the development of sebaceous glands; rather, it may make existing glands more noticeable due to changes in skin tension and hydration.

4. When to Seek Further Evaluation: If the spots or bumps change in size, color, or texture, or if you experience pain, discomfort, or any unusual symptoms, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. Regular check-ups with a urologist can help ensure that any concerns are addressed promptly.
In summary, the presence of sebaceous glands on the glans penis is normal, and the appearance of small bumps or spots is typically not a cause for concern. The wrinkling of the glans when dry is also a normal physiological response. Maintaining good hygiene and being aware of any changes in your body is important, but unless you notice significant changes or experience discomfort, there is generally no need for alarm. If you have ongoing concerns, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for reassurance and guidance.
