Postoperative status after varicocele surgery?
Hello doctor, I would like to inquire about a condition I have after undergoing varicocele surgery a week ago.
The incision is on the left side of my abdomen, and this is my second surgery.
Currently, I have a situation where my left testicle is significantly larger and hangs lower than my right testicle.
Is this normal? Thank you, doctor.

Hello: It is common to experience swelling after surgery (due to circulation reasons).
As long as there is no redness, it should gradually improve.
If there are any concerns, please consult your surgeon during your follow-up appointment.
Wishing you good health.

More Info
After undergoing varicocele surgery, it is not uncommon for patients to experience some swelling or changes in the size of the testicles, particularly in the immediate postoperative period. The left testicle may appear larger than the right for several reasons, and it is essential to understand these factors to alleviate any concerns you may have.
Firstly, swelling is a natural response to surgery. The body reacts to surgical trauma with inflammation, which can lead to temporary swelling in the affected area. This inflammation can cause the left testicle to appear larger, especially if the surgery involved manipulation or ligation of the veins in that area. It is important to note that this swelling should gradually decrease over time as the healing process continues.
In your case, since this is your second surgery, it is possible that there may be some additional scar tissue or changes from the previous procedure that could contribute to the appearance of the left testicle. Scar tissue can sometimes affect the surrounding structures, leading to variations in size or shape.
Another consideration is the presence of fluid accumulation, known as a hydrocele, which can occur after surgery. A hydrocele is a collection of fluid around the testicle, and it can cause the affected testicle to appear larger and more distended. If this is the case, it may resolve on its own, but in some instances, further intervention may be necessary.
It is also crucial to monitor for any signs of complications, such as infection or hematoma (a localized collection of blood outside of blood vessels). Symptoms to watch for include increased redness, warmth, or tenderness in the area, as well as fever or significant pain. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is essential to contact your healthcare provider promptly.
In terms of the long-term outlook, many patients find that the swelling and size differences resolve as they continue to heal. Typically, it can take several weeks to a few months for the body to fully recover from varicocele surgery. During this time, follow-up appointments with your urologist are vital to assess your recovery and address any concerns you may have.
In summary, while it is not unusual for the left testicle to appear larger and more swollen after varicocele surgery, it is essential to keep an eye on your symptoms and communicate with your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized guidance based on your specific situation and ensure that your recovery is progressing as expected. If the swelling persists or worsens, or if you have any other concerns, do not hesitate to reach out for further evaluation. Your health and peace of mind are paramount during the recovery process.
