Can my 14-year-old son still continue to grow taller?
Recently, I took my 14-year-old son to see a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner.
After the consultation, it was found that his growth rate is too slow, and we were advised to seek evaluation from a Western medicine doctor.
After assessing his bone age, the doctor informed us that the growth plate of the first phalanx has closed, and the second phalanx is 98% closed, leaving at most 3 centimeters of potential growth.
I have two questions: 1.
Is it worth pursuing growth hormone treatment for these 3 centimeters? The cost is significant, and there are no guarantees, so I am quite conflicted.
2.
Currently, we may start with traditional Chinese medicine for conditioning, and I encourage my child to jump rope, go to bed early, and reduce sugar intake.
Are there any other methods to potentially gain these 3 centimeters or even more? Thank you!

Dr. Lin Yishou reply Pediatrics
Dear parents, going to bed early and exercising more is very beneficial for growth.
The later growth hormone is administered, the less effective it usually is.
Parents should consider this carefully.
Thank you for your question.

More Info
When it comes to the growth potential of a 14-year-old boy, several factors come into play, including genetics, nutrition, physical activity, and hormonal influences. Based on the information provided, it seems that your son has already experienced some closure of his growth plates, which is a critical factor in determining future height.
1. Growth Hormone Therapy: The question of whether to pursue growth hormone therapy for a potential gain of three centimeters is indeed a complex one. Growth hormone therapy can be effective in certain cases, particularly for children with specific growth hormone deficiencies. However, it is essential to understand that this treatment is not without risks and is typically reserved for those who have a medical indication for it. The cost of growth hormone therapy can be significant, and there is no guarantee of achieving the desired height increase. Given that your son’s growth plates are nearly closed, the likelihood of significant height gain through this method may be limited. Consulting with an endocrinologist who specializes in growth disorders would provide a clearer picture of whether this option is appropriate for your son.
2. Alternative Approaches: While the closure of growth plates limits the potential for height increase, there are still several strategies you can implement to support your son’s overall health and maximize his growth potential. Here are some recommendations:
- Nutrition: A balanced diet rich in essential nutrients is crucial for growth. Ensure that your son consumes adequate amounts of protein, calcium, vitamin D, and other vitamins and minerals. Foods such as lean meats, dairy products, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains should be staples in his diet. Supplements like zinc and vitamin D can also be beneficial, but it’s best to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new supplements.
- Physical Activity: Encouraging regular physical activity is essential. Activities that promote stretching and posture, such as swimming, basketball, and jumping rope, can be particularly beneficial. Exercise stimulates the release of growth hormones and can help improve overall health and fitness.
- Sleep Hygiene: Adequate sleep is vital for growth, especially during adolescence. Growth hormone is primarily secreted during deep sleep, so establishing a regular sleep schedule that allows for sufficient rest is important. Aim for 8-10 hours of quality sleep each night.
- Avoiding Growth Inhibitors: Limiting the intake of sugary foods and beverages, as well as avoiding smoking and excessive caffeine, can help create a more conducive environment for growth.
- Regular Check-ups: Regular visits to a healthcare provider can help monitor your son’s growth and development. If there are any underlying health issues affecting his growth, they can be addressed promptly.
3. Psychological Support: Adolescence can be a challenging time, especially regarding self-esteem and body image. Encouraging a positive self-image and providing emotional support can help your son navigate these challenges, regardless of his height.
In conclusion, while the potential for significant height increase may be limited due to the closure of growth plates, focusing on a balanced diet, regular exercise, good sleep hygiene, and overall health can still contribute positively to your son’s growth and well-being. Consulting with healthcare professionals, including both Western and traditional medicine practitioners, can provide a comprehensive approach to support your son during this critical growth period.
