Swelling of the urethral opening?

Hello Director, I apologize for the inconvenience.
I am number 163759, and I am sending you a clearer image for your reference.
The red circle indicates swelling at the tip of the urethra, along with the frenulum (the frenulum itself appears normal).
The area behind it is normal.
Since there are no other abnormalities and the swelling has not subsided, I hadn't noticed it before due to the pandemic, as I have been checking my temperature daily without any issues.
Thank you for your assistance.

Xiao Hu, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2020/12/29

Dr. Li Minghui reply Urology

There doesn't appear to be any obvious abnormalities.
Upon close examination, the area from the urethral opening to the frenulum shows a slight protrusion, which is considered normal.
You can search for images online and you will find that some people naturally have this appearance.
Are you sure you didn't have this before, or have you experienced any discomfort?

Swelling at the urethral opening can be concerning and may arise from various causes. In your case, the swelling you described at the urethral opening, while the rest of the area appears normal, could be attributed to several factors. Here are some potential causes and considerations:
1. Infection: One of the most common causes of swelling in the urethral area is an infection. This could be a urinary tract infection (UTI) or a sexually transmitted infection (STI). Symptoms may include redness, swelling, pain during urination, or discharge. If there is any suspicion of infection, it is crucial to seek medical attention for appropriate testing and treatment.

2. Inflammation: Conditions such as balanitis (inflammation of the glans) or posthitis (inflammation of the foreskin) can lead to swelling at the urethral opening. These conditions can be caused by irritants, poor hygiene, or infections. If the swelling is accompanied by redness or discomfort, it may indicate inflammation that requires treatment.

3. Allergic Reaction: Allergic reactions to soaps, lotions, or other products that come into contact with the genital area can cause localized swelling. If you have recently changed any products or had new exposure to potential allergens, this could be a contributing factor.

4. Trauma or Injury: Any trauma to the area, even minor, can lead to localized swelling. This could be from vigorous activity, friction, or other forms of injury. If there was any recent activity that could have caused trauma, this might explain the swelling.

5. Phimosis or Frenulum Issues: If the swelling is near the frenulum (the band of tissue on the underside of the penis), it could be related to issues with the frenulum or phimosis (tight foreskin). If the foreskin is not retractable, it can lead to swelling and discomfort.

6. Other Medical Conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as lichen sclerosus or other dermatological issues, can also cause swelling and discomfort in the genital area. If the swelling persists or is accompanied by other symptoms, a dermatologist or urologist should evaluate it.

Given that the swelling has not resolved and considering the ongoing concerns, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. They may perform a physical examination, take a medical history, and possibly conduct tests (like a urine test or swab) to determine the underlying cause of the swelling.
In the meantime, it is essential to maintain good hygiene, avoid irritants, and refrain from any activities that may exacerbate the condition. If you experience any additional symptoms such as fever, increased pain, or changes in urination, seek medical attention promptly.

In summary, while swelling at the urethral opening can arise from various causes, proper evaluation and diagnosis by a healthcare professional are crucial for effective treatment and management.

Hello: There should not be a fissure issue; the urethral opening is naturally a slit when not urinating. Redness, swelling, and pain may indicate localized skin inflammation or urethritis. If symptoms persist, it is advisable to seek medical attention. Wishing you good health.
