Does Boska cause hematospermia?

Hello, doctor.
I have male pattern baldness and I regularly take Finasteride, 1/4 of a tablet daily.
Today, while doing some DIY, I suddenly noticed blood in my semen during ejaculation.
I'm not sure if this medication could be causing this issue.

Dr. Li Xinyi reply Urology

Hello: BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia) does not cause hematospermia.
Hematospermia is generally benign and may be related to stones within the prostate.
If there are concerns, it is advisable to visit a urologist for an examination and discuss with the physician.

More Info

Proscar, known generically as finasteride, is a medication commonly prescribed for conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia). While it is generally well-tolerated, some patients may experience side effects, including sexual dysfunction and changes in semen quality. One of the less common side effects associated with finasteride is hematospermia, which is the presence of blood in the semen.

Hematospemia can be alarming for patients, and it is important to understand its potential causes and the implications of this symptom. In the case of Proscar, the exact mechanism by which it may lead to hematospermia is not fully understood. However, it is believed that the drug's action on the hormonal pathways involved in prostate health and semen production may contribute to changes in the seminal fluid, potentially leading to bleeding.

It is essential to consider that hematospermia can arise from various other causes unrelated to medication. These can include:
1. Infections: Infections of the prostate (prostatitis), seminal vesicles, or urinary tract can lead to inflammation and bleeding.

2. Trauma: Any injury to the genital area or pelvis can result in blood in the semen.

3. Vascular Issues: Conditions affecting blood vessels in the reproductive system, such as varicoceles or vascular malformations, can also cause hematospermia.

4. Tumors: Although less common, tumors in the prostate or surrounding areas can lead to bleeding.

5. Other Medications: Certain anticoagulants or medications affecting blood clotting can contribute to this symptom.

If you are experiencing hematospermia after starting Proscar, it is crucial to consult with your healthcare provider. They may recommend a thorough evaluation, which could include a physical examination, a review of your medical history, and possibly imaging studies or laboratory tests to rule out other potential causes.

In terms of management, if Proscar is determined to be the cause of your hematospermia, your doctor may suggest adjusting the dosage or switching to an alternative treatment for hair loss or prostate health. It is important not to discontinue or adjust your medication without professional guidance.

In summary, while Proscar can potentially cause hematospermia, it is essential to evaluate other possible causes. Prompt consultation with a healthcare professional is advisable to ensure proper diagnosis and management. Keeping an open line of communication with your doctor about any side effects you experience is vital for your overall health and well-being.
