Medication side effects
Hello, Doctor.
I am currently taking Proscar (finasteride) and applying a hair growth solution to treat male pattern baldness.
I cut the 5mg Proscar into quarters or thirds for dosing (since the other medication is only 1mg).
I would like to ask you a few questions:
1.
Does long-term use of Proscar increase the risk of prostate cancer?
2.
The instructions indicate that taking Proscar may lead to infertility and reduced semen volume.
If I stop taking the medication, will there still be any effects? How long should I discontinue the medication before trying to conceive, as I am planning to get pregnant?
3.
Does long-term use of Proscar cause gastric ulcers? I had gastric ulcers and gastrointestinal issues recently; will continuing Proscar lead to a recurrence of ulcers or affect my gastrointestinal health?
4.
Does applying the hair growth solution (a topical hair tonic) pose a risk for glaucoma and blurred vision? If I plan to get pregnant, will using the hair growth solution have adverse effects similar to taking Proscar?
5.
Due to concerns about the side effects of Proscar (such as cancer and infertility), I am not taking it daily; I take it every few days instead.
How effective is this approach? If I only use the hair growth solution without taking any medication, what results can I expect?
6.
I currently have an M-shaped baldness pattern that is extending towards the crown.
Should I undergo detailed blood tests or other examinations at a major hospital? Besides hair transplantation, taking finasteride, and applying the hair growth solution, are there other medications or treatment options available?
Thank you, Doctor, for your responses.
I really appreciate it.

1.
There is no evidence to suggest.
2.
There is no need to discontinue medication, as it is merely a matter of fertility.
3.
There is no evidence to suggest.
4.
It is uncertain.
5.
The effectiveness will certainly be diminished, making it difficult to assess the efficacy.
6.
Blood tests are not necessary unless there is suspicion of other causes of hair loss; treatment options need to be evaluated in person.

More Info
When considering the use of Proscar (finasteride) and topical hair growth products, it is essential to understand both the potential side effects and the overall treatment strategy for male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia).
1. Proscar and Prostate Cancer: There has been some concern regarding the long-term use of finasteride and its association with prostate cancer. However, studies have shown that while finasteride may reduce the overall risk of developing prostate cancer, it can be associated with a higher risk of high-grade prostate cancer in some men. It is crucial to have regular check-ups with your healthcare provider, including prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing, to monitor any potential risks.
2. Fertility Concerns: Finasteride can indeed affect fertility by reducing semen volume and potentially impacting sperm quality. If you are planning to conceive, it is advisable to discuss with your doctor how long you should stop taking the medication before attempting to conceive. Generally, it is recommended to wait at least a month after discontinuation for sperm parameters to return to baseline, but this can vary among individuals.
3. Gastrointestinal Issues: There is no direct evidence linking finasteride to the development of gastric ulcers. However, if you have a history of gastrointestinal problems, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely while on the medication. If you experience any new gastrointestinal issues, consult your healthcare provider.
4. Topical Hair Growth Products: The use of topical minoxidil (often referred to as hair growth water or serum) is generally safe and does not typically cause serious side effects like glaucoma or vision problems. However, it is essential to apply it correctly to minimize the risk of systemic absorption. If you are planning to conceive, topical minoxidil is considered safer than finasteride, but it is still wise to consult your healthcare provider for personalized advice.
5. Dosing Frequency and Effectiveness: Taking Proscar less frequently than prescribed may reduce its effectiveness in treating hair loss. Consistency is key in achieving the desired results. If you are concerned about side effects, discuss alternative dosing strategies or other treatment options with your healthcare provider. Relying solely on topical treatments may not yield the same results as a combined approach.
6. Further Evaluation: If you are experiencing significant hair loss, especially if it has progressed to the crown of your head, it may be beneficial to undergo further evaluation. Blood tests can help rule out other underlying conditions that may contribute to hair loss, such as thyroid issues or hormonal imbalances. Consulting with a dermatologist or a specialist in hair restoration can provide additional insights and treatment options, including potential medications or therapies beyond what you are currently using.
In summary, while Proscar and topical hair growth products can be effective in managing male pattern baldness, they come with potential side effects that should be monitored closely. Regular consultations with your healthcare provider are essential to tailor a treatment plan that considers your health history, fertility plans, and any other concerns you may have. Always prioritize open communication with your healthcare provider to ensure the best outcomes for your hair loss treatment.
