Could it be pregnancy?

Hello, doctor.
My menstrual cycle is approximately 34 days, and my period lasts for 7 days.
My last period started on January 23, and on February 24, I had unprotected intercourse for the first two days of my period with some light bleeding.
My period started on February 26 as scheduled (lasting 7 days, with a heavy flow for the first three days, which should be my menstruation?).
However, in the past few days, I have been experiencing abdominal cramping close to ovulation.
I'm unsure if this is due to ovulation or psychological factors.
I would like to know if there is a possibility of pregnancy.

Xiao Xia, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/03/14

Dear Xia,
Based on your description, it does seem like a normal menstrual period, and the likelihood of pregnancy is low.
However, I still recommend visiting a gynecologist to investigate the cause of your abdominal cramps.

More Info

Understanding whether you could be pregnant involves a careful consideration of your menstrual cycle, symptoms, and any recent sexual activity. Based on the information you've provided, let's break down your situation.

Your menstrual cycle is approximately 34 days long, with menstruation lasting about 7 days. You mentioned that your last period started on January 23, and you experienced some spotting two days before your next expected period on February 24. This spotting could be due to a variety of reasons, including hormonal fluctuations, ovulation, or even implantation bleeding if you were pregnant. However, since you reported a full menstrual period starting on February 26, it is likely that the spotting was not indicative of pregnancy.

The timing of your cycle is also important. Ovulation typically occurs about 14 days before your next period is due. Given your cycle length, ovulation would likely occur around day 20 of your cycle (approximately February 12). If you had unprotected intercourse around this time, there is a possibility of pregnancy. However, since you mentioned that you had a full menstrual period afterward, it is less likely that you are pregnant.

The abdominal pain you are experiencing near your ovulation period could be related to ovulation itself, known as mittelschmerz, which is a common occurrence for many women. This pain is typically mild and localized to one side of the abdomen, depending on which ovary is releasing an egg. If the pain is severe or accompanied by other symptoms such as heavy bleeding, fever, or unusual discharge, it would be advisable to consult a healthcare professional.

If you are still concerned about the possibility of pregnancy, consider taking a home pregnancy test. These tests are most accurate when taken after a missed period. Since you have had a menstrual period, the likelihood of being pregnant is low, but if you experience any unusual symptoms or if your next period is late, it would be wise to test again or consult with a healthcare provider.

In summary, based on your cycle and the timing of your symptoms, it seems unlikely that you are pregnant. However, if you have any doubts or if your symptoms persist, seeking medical advice is always a good step. Remember, understanding your body and its cycles can take time, and it's perfectly normal to have questions about your reproductive health. If you have further concerns or experience significant changes in your menstrual cycle or symptoms, don't hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional for personalized advice and support.
