Post-operative issues after circumcision?
Hello Doctor: Today is the sixth day after my circumcision laser surgery.
About the fourth day, the outpatient physician said I no longer need to bandage it, but since the wound is painful and swollen like a donut, I continue to disinfect it with iodine and wrap the area with clean gauze, changing it twice a day.
1.
I have noticed a small amount of oozing blood on the right and lower sides of the surgical area.
Can I still take a shower, or should I continue to just wipe the area?
2.
There is a small hard lump that I can feel above the swollen area of the penis, from the base to the wound.
Is this normal, or should I return for a follow-up visit? Thank you very much for your response!

Hello: 1) Not recommended.
2) Commonly occurs, usually caused by circulation issues or postoperative blood clots, and can be absorbed over several weeks.
If it enlarges or becomes red, please return for a follow-up.
Wishing you good health.

After a circumcision, it is common to experience some pain, swelling, and discomfort as part of the healing process. Given that you are now on the sixth day post-surgery, it is important to monitor your symptoms closely and follow proper care guidelines to ensure a smooth recovery.
1. Wound Care and Bathing: Since you are still experiencing some bleeding and swelling, it is advisable to continue with gentle care. If there is any active bleeding, even if it is minimal, you should avoid submerging the area in water, such as in a bathtub or swimming pool, until the bleeding has completely stopped and the wound has healed. Instead, you can continue to clean the area with mild soap and water during showers, ensuring that you do not directly scrub the surgical site. Pat the area dry gently with a clean towel afterward. If you notice any significant changes in the bleeding, such as increased amounts or a change in color, it would be prudent to consult your doctor.
2. Swelling and Hardness: The presence of a small hard lump in the area above the surgical site can be a normal part of the healing process. This could be due to swelling or the formation of scar tissue. However, if the lump is painful, growing in size, or accompanied by other symptoms such as increased redness, warmth, or discharge, it is essential to seek medical advice. These could be signs of an infection or other complications that may require further evaluation.
In general, here are some additional care tips to consider during your recovery:
- Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, can help manage discomfort. Always follow the dosage instructions on the package or those provided by your healthcare provider.
- Avoid Strenuous Activities: Refrain from engaging in strenuous activities or sexual intercourse until your doctor gives you the green light. This will help prevent any strain on the surgical site and promote healing.
- Monitor for Signs of Infection: Keep an eye out for signs of infection, which may include increased redness, swelling, warmth, or discharge from the wound, as well as fever. If you experience any of these symptoms, contact your healthcare provider promptly.
- Follow-Up Appointments: It is important to attend any follow-up appointments with your healthcare provider. They can assess your healing progress and address any concerns you may have.
- Hygiene: Maintain good hygiene by washing your hands before touching the surgical area and keeping the area clean and dry.
In conclusion, while some pain and swelling are normal after circumcision, it is crucial to monitor your symptoms closely. If you have any concerns about your healing process or if symptoms worsen, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further guidance. Your health and comfort are paramount, and they can provide the best advice tailored to your specific situation.
