The scrotum has been persistently itchy (itchy enough to want to scratch)?
I have been experiencing itching in my scrotum for quite some time.
It gets very itchy at night while I’m sleeping, so I keep scratching it.
After doing some DIY work today, I scratched again, and now it feels like there’s a pimple that has burst on the underside of my scrotum.
I also feel itching at the base of my penis, on the sides of my scrotum, and even in the groin area.
What could be the cause of this?

Hello! Based on what you mentioned, it could possibly be scrotal eczema or caused by excessive washing or dryness of the skin.
I recommend rinsing the affected area with clean water (temporarily stop using body wash) and then patting it dry with a clean cloth.
For the areas where the pimples have burst, you may apply an antibiotic ointment as needed.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.

More Info
Itchy scrotum can be an uncomfortable and distressing condition, and it can arise from various causes. Understanding the underlying reasons for the itchiness is crucial for effective treatment and relief. Here are some common causes and potential solutions for itchy scrotum:
Common Causes of Itchy Scrotum
1. Fungal Infections: One of the most common causes of scrotal itching is a fungal infection, such as tinea cruris (jock itch). This condition is characterized by a red, itchy rash that can spread to the groin area and may cause discomfort.
2. Bacterial Infections: Bacterial infections can also lead to itching and irritation. Conditions like folliculitis, which is the inflammation of hair follicles, can cause small, painful bumps that may resemble pimples.
3. Skin Conditions: Dermatitis, including contact dermatitis, can occur due to irritation from soaps, detergents, or other products. Eczema and psoriasis can also affect the scrotal area, leading to itching and redness.
4. Hygiene Issues: Poor hygiene can contribute to itching, as sweat and bacteria can accumulate in the groin area. Conversely, excessive washing or using harsh soaps can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation.
5. Allergic Reactions: Allergies to certain fabrics, soaps, or personal care products can cause itching and irritation in the scrotal area.
6. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Some STIs, such as herpes or genital warts, can cause itching and discomfort in the genital area.
7. Scabies or Lice: Infestations by scabies mites or pubic lice can lead to intense itching in the genital region.
Solutions for Relief
1. Maintain Good Hygiene: Regularly wash the area with mild soap and water, and ensure that the area is thoroughly dried afterward. Avoid using harsh soaps or products that can irritate the skin.
2. Wear Loose-Fitting Clothing: Opt for breathable, loose-fitting underwear made from natural fibers like cotton. This can help reduce moisture and friction, which can exacerbate itching.
3. Topical Treatments: Over-the-counter antifungal creams or powders can be effective if a fungal infection is suspected. For dermatitis or allergic reactions, hydrocortisone cream may help reduce inflammation and itching.
4. Avoid Scratching: While it can be tempting to scratch the itchy area, doing so can worsen the irritation and lead to secondary infections. Keeping nails trimmed and using cold compresses can help alleviate the urge to scratch.
5. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If the itching persists or worsens, it’s essential to consult a healthcare provider. They can perform a physical examination, take a medical history, and possibly conduct tests to determine the underlying cause. Depending on the diagnosis, they may prescribe antifungal medications, antibiotics, or other treatments.
6. Lifestyle Changes: If the itching is related to sweating or heat, consider lifestyle changes such as weight management, avoiding tight clothing, and using moisture-wicking fabrics during physical activities.
7. Avoid Irritants: Identify and avoid any potential irritants, such as certain soaps, laundry detergents, or fabrics that may be causing allergic reactions.
Conclusion
In summary, an itchy scrotum can result from various factors, including infections, skin conditions, hygiene issues, and allergies. It is essential to identify the underlying cause to determine the appropriate treatment. If symptoms persist or worsen, seeking medical advice is crucial for proper diagnosis and management. Taking preventive measures and maintaining good hygiene can significantly reduce the risk of developing itchy scrotum in the future.
